In ABDC6, Phunk Phenomenon used their time on the show to advocate for and spread awareness of Sanfilippo Syndrome through their Hip Hop for Hope campaign. Earlier this year, they joined a contest hosted by Vivint for money to help research a cure for this genetic disorder. We posted the link on this blog, and thanks to your help, they were the Eastern Region Winners, with 176,897 votes, winning the Team Sanfilippo Foundation $100,000 for research! This was the second most amount of votes in the whole contest for one organization, and it couldn't have been done without your help or Phunk Phenomenon's advocacy! Thank you!

KoopaTV | Dance Clip of the Day: "Bring Me Back"
Hey! This episode of KoopaTV takes out to Oakland for another Yakfilms feature! Today we visit the dancer, Chonkie, in a one-shot, full length video of his dope tutting skills.
The thing I love about this video, is how the camera and Chonkie are almost always in constant motion, throughout the entire freestyle. Check it out:

Video: Jason Rillera (The Company) - "Celebration"
This 19 year old dancer, Jason Rillera, shows a LOT of promise, as one of the many talented young members of The Company. You may remember some of his work, when he performed "Deuces" at Vibe XVI, or his piece to "Unusual" at WoD LA 2011.
Here is his newest piece from his Youtube channel, [JasonRillera]:
Legendary Hip Hop | Battle Squad - BOTY 1992
Battle of the Year (BOTY), often called the premier international bboying competition, has a history dating back to 1990. Today's Legendary Hip Hop Post features one of the earlier competitions, in 1992. For those of you who don't know, BOTY has two rounds: exhibition and battle. All crews do a choreographed exhibition piece, and the top 4 battle it out for the top place. Usually these crews consist of at least 8 people. Ichigeki's crew (featured in a past Legendary Hip Hop post) had 9. Today's Legendary Hip Hop post is Legendary because in 1992, the champions of BOTY was a two man squad, Battle Squad, consisting of Bboy Storm and Bboy Swift Rock. Of course, the video here is of 1992 quality, and bboying has come a long way since then, but it's still impressive to see such a feat accomplished.

KoopaTV | Dance Clip of the Day: "Anthony Lee - Without You"
Hey! We're going back to Cali! Today's episode of KoopaTV visits Anthony Lee (Kinjaz/ LXD/ CADC) recording this popping routine. I also found that the message in his description matched the uplifting vibe of this video:
"This piece represents the idea [to me that is...] that life isn't so easy all the time, and in many of those circumstances, I probably wouldn't have made it through as best as I did without the support of so many loved ones in my life. To my friends, my family and the Man upstairs. It's not meant to be depressing or lonely at all...ahahah at least to me."

Spotlight: Kinetic Art Crew
In the midst of an era when most bboying out there is in competetive jams and battles, it can be hard to define whether the dance is a sport or an artform. The Kinetic Art Crew definitely seems to push for the latter.
Consisting of members from Japan, they combine traditional bboy aspects with influences such as yoga, circus gymnastics, contemporary in order to show a softer, yet no less intense, side of bboying. Their poetic and breathtaking style goes to show that bboying is a multifaceted dance, and ever growing. Check them out on their tumblr, and in the following clips.

KoopaTV | Dance Clip of the Day: "100 Years in 100 Seconds"
Hello! Today's episode of KoopaTV is not only a trip to East London, but a trip back through time! Opening on September, 13th 2011, as Europe's largest "Urban Shopping Centre," Westfield Stratford City claims that they will 'transform' the retail landscape.
Whether or not their claims are true, they have recently released this campaign video, showcase the changing fashion styles over the past 100 years in East London. However, the popular theme about this video is not just the constantly changing style of clothing, but the two dancers, mimicking the popular style of dance, corresponding to their attire.
This video creates such a wonderful and seamless journey through time. Enjoy:

Hey guys! Koopa's internet took another hit today, so he asked me to fill in for him. Anyway, today we travel to Seattle, Washington for a very special collaboration! Video: Affion Crockett - "It's About Time"
I really didn't know WHAT to think, when I heard that Comedian, Affion Crockett, was behind this movement. I thought his interview would be full of jokes and random banter. However, I was completely surprised to see just how genuine and touching Affion's perspective was on the struggle that dancers goe through, each and every day.
I personally believe everyone should check this out, and if you're moved by this dream, support the "It's About Time" Movement, and subscribe to their channel!

Hey! This episode of KoopaTV is more of a dedication, than a normal post. Today we're talking about male pole dancer, Steven Retchless, and his last performance in the Semi-Finals of America's Got Talent, before he was eliminated.

Legendary Hip Hop | Ichigeki
After a few weeks of popping and locking, time for Legendary Hip Hop to return to bboying! This post, we go to Battle of the Year (BOTY) 2005. If you've watched the movie Planet Bboy, you already know what I'm talking about. For those who don't, BOTY has two parts: a showcase and a battle round. The top showcases get to battle each other for a chance at the battle round to win the whole thing. While Ichigeki (reppin' Japan), didn't win the overall battle vs Korea's Last For One, they did win the best showcase. And by golly what a showcase, still considered by many to be the best ever at a BOTY.
First, to understand why this is legendary, you must realize that for a long time, powermoves tended to rule routines. In general, crews would take pre-mixed songs and choreograph a series of powermoves (largely a set of solos or duos), and perform that. While crews before have branched out some to explore other aspects of presenting a routine (such as previous Legendary Hip Hop featuree Expression crew in 2002, and Firework crew in 2003), few have taken it to the level that Ichigeki did. Largely seen as underdogs in the competition, their mix of mixed-from-scratch music, combined with a tribute to other aspects of hip hop culture (specifically DJing), and the whole focus on musicality, creativity, and a storyline all helped contribute to this routine which shows the more artistic side of bboying.
To conclude what is probably the longest Legendary Hip Hop post, I point to my favorite part of the routine - Katu's solo right after the mad headspin at 4:55

Videos: AGT amok - Gymkana accident with fire, Fatally Unique insane asylum, Summerwind Skippers apocalypse!
It's the second week of the America's Got Talent Semi-finals, and the contestants are trying to make an impression on the audience. Dancers had mixed success: the judges told Snap Boogie and Silhouette that they weren't exciting enough. Fatally Unique's insane asylum routine was good but perhaps not "fatally unique enough"
Summerwind Skippers (which includes members of America's Best Dance Crew Season 5 Saltare) skipped till the world ended, but Piers Morgan complained about mistakes (watch it here). And Gymkana's act was cut short when they messed up a trick with fire and burned two members.

Tell me how to make this website better!
This website was started about three years ago to create a community for people who like America's Best Dance Crew and hip hop dance -- whether as observers or as participants. The goal was to create a vibrant place by sharing examples of amazing work, getting people talking to each other, and making it fun.
I think we've been somewhat successful, but over the past year some events may have changed the dynamic here, including 1. debates during ABDC Season 6 about ICONic Boyz, and
2. increased participation of Koopa, Ninjaboi, and others resulting in more posts per day and broader dance coverage. This site still has lots of readers, but the number of comments and level of debate is really down, and I'm not sure why.
I want to know what we can do to improve. And, I want to know if we are missing opportunities -- or the boat. So, please leave a comment and tell us what you like and don't like here. Comment on anything important to you -- some topics that have been suggested include: do we need more content or less? are we covering the right things? how can we get you to participate more? is it wrong to mix ABDC and hip hop dance? Does the site's name drive away potential readers? And, if you have friends who have stopped reading, please ask them to stop by and leave a comment on why they left. If you think it's better to be anonymous, that's fine. Thanks for your thoughts.

Legendary Hip Hop | Boogaloo Shrimp Moonwalks
Over the last two posts, we've covered two legendary crews, the Electric Boogaloos and the Lockers. Here we showcase a dancer who can be considered a product of the two.
Michael "Boogaloo Shrimp" Chambers is a master of popping, with some locking and bboying thrown in there for good measure. He was taught by Electric Boogaloo member Boogaloo Sam, and would later go on to collaborate with Popin Pete, Locker member Shabba-Doo, and fellow Legendary Dancer Poppin Taco. His major claims to fame are appearing as Turbo in the Breakn' dance movie series, and teaching the moonwalk to Michael Jackson. You can see this iconic dance move in this video (from the Breakin' movie) at about 0:15.

Sometimes we spend forever and a day wondering what could be.
Sometimes we ignore our heart to silence the simple truth of our feelings.
Open your eyes, take a chance, and trust.
This is me and this is what I wish I could say to you."

KoopaTV | Dance Clip of the Day: "Evolution 6: Teaser"
Yo! We're back to New York with this episode of KoopaTV! Today we join the film crew of Navator.com, as they created a preview video, for Evolution 6, one of the most anticipated bboy jams of the year!
Evolution 6, taking place October 7-10th, is going down in the birthplace of Hip-Hop, New York. To set the mood, Navator took to the streets of Brooklyn with Bboys Tommy Gun (Renegades), and Diego (X-Fenz), to capture some candid footage.
But the amazing thing about Bboy Tommy Gun, is that he only has ONE LEG! Yet, he's been rocking (and winning battles) for years, alongside the rest of his notorious crew! Just check out this video, and see how quickly you forget he's 'handicapped':

Well now you can! The Movement Lifestyle (mL) store is finally open! Just click the link, [Here], to go to the store's page. As of now, both black/white versions of the "Movement Lifestyle" T-shirt and the "Movement Is A Lifestyle" tank are still available:

Video: Hazmat & Shasha's Look At Me Now
Aloha! Fresh from our good friends in Hawaii at Hype50TV (ABDC Season 5 alum crew Hype 5-0's youtube channel), comes a collaboration between Hazmat (Hype) and amazing young dancer Shasha (Junior Hype) in her first piece ever. Judging from her moves it's safe to say that we'll be hearing a lot more of Shasha and Junior Hype in the future!
Tic Tic Poreotics Update
Poreotics won ABDC on MTV, and now are gunning for a show of their own. Here's the pilot trailer for "Poreotics: Life After..." and they need your support! They show that while they may be great friends, not everything is always perfectly peachy within even the most successful of crews.

The trademark shades and tutting sequence are all over this video, meaning that we'll probably be seeing a lot of Poreotics in the final cut. Congrats, guys! Thanks for the link, Perez!

Hej! We're going back to Sweden! This episode of KoopaTV joins Lin Samuelsen, creator and owner of The Hip Drop, as she performs, with the assistance of the S**t Kingz, a very special farewell performance as an instructor at the annual Summer Drop workshops.
As stated in the video, she was the first person to ever bring S**t Kingz to Europe, greatly expanding their popularity. She has done a lot for the European dance scene, through her work with The Hip Drop. Check out their Youtube channel, [Here].
Thank you, Lin! Thank you for the 6 long years of hard work and dedication you've put into The Hip Drop. We hope to see more of your work in the future!

The Game Changer: Boys and Girls with Short Hair
*Note: This used to be the "Legendary Moments" series, but the name has been changed due to several factors.
This performance, choreographed by Keone Madrid and Mariel Martin, really will be remembered as a classic. As a full set, this is one of the earlier creations, created by this amazing couple. It gave us an amazing glimpse into their passion for dance (regardless of genre) as well as the powerful connection, born from their love:

Legendary Hip Hop | The Lockers
Yet again, on Legendary Hip Hop, we feature another OG crew. What can I say? These people are truly legendary. This time, we feature the Campbellockers, more commonly known as the Lockers. When Don Campbellock inadvertenly created the signature locking movements of this dance style (hence the name), he ushered in a whole new style of funk dance. Made up of members Campbellock, Toni Basil, Fred Berry, Greg Pope, Shabba-doo, Slim the Robot, and Fluky Luke, they performed for a number of years across the nation, and have since gone on to do their own individual work in dance, coming together now and then for reunion performances. Check them out on their website: http://www.thelockersdance.com/Here's a 1970 Soul Train performance:
Watch Episode 4 of LXD Season 3 now - Harry Schum Jr. and the regulars "Can't Dance"
The LXD storyline returns to the present day and the current episode stars the students who comprise the next generation of LXD. Elliott (Harry Schum Jr.) needs new shoes in order to dance, so Sp3cimen (Madd Chadd) and the others visit the costume shop/salon to get a new pair made. Mari Koda (also seen in the Step Up movies) guest stars in this LXD meets Project Runway episode -- a happy diversion from the mayhem of the previous Season 3 episodes.

KoopaTV | Dance Clip of the Day: "Miami All-Stars - Semis"
Hey! Today's episode of KoopaTV stays in the states for America's Got Talent's Semi-Final round. Although Team iLuminate and West Springfield Dance Team have been recieving A LOT of attention for their performances, I was really surprised to find this performance flying right under the radar!
From a 'technique' perspective, I personally found this to be the strongest dance act of the night. They showcased amazing swing, ballet, and bboy choreography, all under a upbeat jazzy theme. This act was so complete, there's not much I can say against it.
But if you want to decide for yourself, watch the other videos, here [AmericanBestTalent]:
Thanks to Teldon for giving me the tip to look for this performance, it was really worth it!

Kickstarter Project: "Uploaded" Documentary with Victor Kim, Keone Madrid, Mariel Martin
So, I came across this film project online and I thought I'd share it with you guys. "Uploaded: The Asian American Movement" is a documentary currently in production that's taking a look at how Asian American's are utilizing new media such as Youtube to overcome historical prejudices against Asians in mainstream media. Before you go on and say "Wait Ninjaboi! This is a dance blog, not an Asian American activism blog!" Hold your horses. Part of the documentary looks at dancers in this online media, and they hope to interview Victor Kim (ABDC3 Quest Crew), Keone Madrid and Mariel Martin (Movement Lifestyle).
I say "hope to" because the project has set up a Kickstarter. Though they made their goal already, all extra funds will improve the finished project. Pledge gifts include autographed copies of the DVD, Tshirts, and tickets to screenings. Click here for more information and to give money to the project.

Legendary Hip Hop | Electric Boogaloos: Soul Train
Today on Legendary Hip Hop we showcase yet another OG crew: Electric Boogaloos. Back when popping was just beginning, this is the crew that helped get it all started. Breaking may have started in New York on the East Coast, but these pioneers held down the dance scene on the West, Fresno, CA to be exact. In fact, the name of the most basic popping move, the Fresno, originates from this crew's origin place. Made up of popping Legends, such as Boogaloo Sam, Popin Pete, Skeeter Rabbit, SugaPop, Mr Wiggles. While Boogaloo may have since been grouped together with G-style to form the two main styles of popping, these pioneers will always be remembered for the work they put into this style. Enjoy this 1980 clip of them on Soul Train!
