Review: Michael Jackson ONE (Cirque Du Soleil)
As a person who has seen A LOT of Michael Jackson tribute shows, trust me when I say that Michael Jackson ONE is truly the best. Without a doubt, it is the closest feeling to attending an actual MJ concert ever since the King's passing. Everyone would absolutely love it - from the casual fan to the most hardcore, glove-wearing, devotee. Dancers, and fans of dance, would especially enjoy that it's very dance-intensive. And why wouldn't it be? It was choreographed by Michael's choreographer, Travis Payne- along with Rich & Tone Talauega, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, Olivier Simola, Ben Potvin, Adrea Ziegler, Ivan 'Flipz' Velez (Groovaloos), and the one and only, Parris Goebel (ReQuest Dance Crew, Royal Family). Also, featured in the show are dancers from ABDC 6's 787 Crew (Puerto Rico) and ReQuest Dance Crew (New Zealand). Michael's original music was brilliantly remixed and remastered by musical director, Kevin Antunes, and perfectly suited the enchanting story that only Cirque Du Soleil can tell. And 'enchanting' is certainly the word that best describes this show. Even as I type up this review, it's a struggle trying to remember everything that happened because I was so captivated and entralled.

Video: Lil Mama in teaser for "CrazySexyCool" - biopic about TLC
It's been pointed out that the MTV VMAs showcased the 'next acts' for two of the three original ABDC judges. As pointed out in earlier posts, JC Chasez reunited with his NSYNC band members in the Justin Timberlake tribute. And, the show aired the promo for the new movie about TLC called "CrazySexyCool", where Lil Mama portrays Left Eye Lopes. Watch it here:
JC Chasez interview: No -- NSYNC will not do a concert together
Despite the accolades that NSYNC received for their appearance on MTV's VMAs, the boy group is not planning to go on the road. In an interview in USA Today, NSYNC member (and ABDC judge) JC Chasez said: "Justin gave me a buzz and he said, 'Hey man, listen. I'm getting this award and they have given me a pile of time to perform and we started our careers at MTV and I think we should get the band back together.' " But it was a one-time event, according to the article.
Not the least of the issues -- the guys had trouble doing their signature dance moves: 'When it came to practicing their moves from 11 years ago, "everyone was going, 'Can we go through this one more time slowly?' … So that part was pretty funny.'

World of Dance hit Houston on August 23, 2013. SOREAL (in the family of ABDC's runnerup SoReal Cru) took first place in the Adult Division competition, followed by Wyldstyl and Galing Cru.
Video: Justin Timberlake medley on VMAs with NSYNC (and Fanny Pak backup dancer)
One of the highlights of the MTV VMAs on August 24, 2014 was definitely the long medley of Justin Timberlakes' greatest hits, including a very short reunion with NSYNC (beginning her at 11:00). As icing on the cake for ABDC fans: Fanny Pak's Natalie Gilmore performed as one of Timberlakes' backup dancers.

The Royal Family: Defend the Throne
By now, many of us know how this story ends. New Zealand's Royal Family successfully achieved their goal in defending their Gold medal championships. But as Big Poppa says, "There's no win if there's no work"- and these guys certainly put in the work. As someone who attended HHI, I can attest there is no other crew that carry themselves the way The Royal Family does at Worlds. You can tell that their work ethic is second to none and that's why they're the champions. Check out this amazing journey from hip-hop dance's royalty, The Royal Family as they 'Defend the Throne'. FLIP (Canada) Gold Medal Performance at HHI '13
I've been a fan of these girls ever since I saw them at last year's HHI (Silver Medal). Then I saw them earlier in the year when they performed (and won) with the All.Young.All.Stars at WoD Montreal. With the intensity and passion these girls perform with, I knew they were bound to get Gold soon. Well, 'soon' quickly became 'now' as they led the Junior Division with this performance. The Ecsntrcs (USA) Perform at HHI '13
Here's another set I enjoyed watching throughout the week from The Ecsntrcs. Originally from Fullerton, CA, The Ecsntrcs grabbed a Bronze medal at the USA Finals in the Adult Division and went on to compete at Worlds. But other than their brilliant performance, the crew brings a positive message and inspiration to everyone with their back story. Check out their performance at the USA Finals below along with an interview with 'Crane' from PacificRimVideoPress- where he talks about dancing despite dealing with a painful medical disorder. NSYNC to reunite for MTV's VMAs this weekend!
When America's Best Dance Crew was still on the air, the biggest question that judge JC Chasez ALWAYS got was "When will NSYNC reunite?" His answers was always: Never. Well, never has arrived. According to EOnline! news, the boy band members -- Justin Timberlake, J.C. Chasez, Lance Bass, Joey Fatone and Chris Kirkpatrick -- will perform together on MTV's VMA Awards, to air on Sunday August 25, 2013. They last performed together in 2004. Will you watch? In other JC Chasez news, he just launched an 11 member girl group called Girl Radical, inspired by Japanese megagroup AKB48.
Here's the last NSYNC TV appearance, doing a Bee Gees medley at the 2003 Grammys.

Video: Elecoldxhot (Malaysia) Performance from HHI '13
This is my favorite story of HHI... Usually, when a crew is introduced at Worlds, most (if not all) the cheering and applause for that crew would come from friends and family of those dancers or at least their fellow country-men. But that wasn't the case with Malaysia's Elecoldxhot- when these guys were introduced in the Preliminaries, NO ONE had a clue who they were. I believe they were the only crew representing Malaysia. In fact, they got so much of a 'dead reaction', the host (Mookie) somewhat yelled at the audience, commanding us to show some love to Malaysia.... Then they performed their set and received a ROARING ovation from the crowd. The entire ballroom erupted! What truly made that performance special was that it totally turned the mood of that room upside down. Besides the clean choreography, it was just fun and refreshing routine to see in hip-hop competition. They ranked first place in the division. Throughout the rest of the week, everyone knew and loved Elecoldxhot. So much so, that they grabbed a well-deserved Bronze medal at the World Championships. And everytime I watch this performance, I'm humming the "Can-Can" song for the rest of the day. Congrats guys! From OfficialHHI YouTube.

Videos: Praise Team (Canada) & UP Streetdance (Philippines) at HHI '13
In the next couple days, I'll be posting some of my favorite routines from this year's Hip-Hop International. It was my second year attending HHI, and trust me when I say that watching these performances online don't even come close to watching it in person. It's hard to explain, but there are certain emotions and vibes from the routines that don't translate well on video as opposed to actually being there. Especially with these videos- one, wide shot of the stage... zoom-ins and some camera movement would be appreciated...
The first performances I want to show today are from the Silver and Bronze medal winners of the Mega Crew Division. The competition was FIERCE this year. And you can tell which crews busted their asses to be there. Canada's Praise Team surely had one of the most entertaining shows of the week with their take on 'The Wizard of Oz'. Being that I'm not a 'dance expert', I won't comment on the choreography and technique too much, but this routine was very clean and flowed perfectly. I especially enjoyed from 3:30 and on.
Next up is UP Streetdance from the Philippines. In the preliminaries, they placed 2nd in the rankings and maintained their placement in the Semi's with a few changes in the routine including the slow-motion bit. Great job! All the hard work certainly paid off...

Video: Academy of Villains at Vidcon
From World of Dance, here's Academy of Villains at this year's Vidcon. Thanks ninjaboi!
PLEASE COMMENT: Which were the all-time 'best' America's Best Dance Crew crews and dancers?
It's been over a year since MTV shut down America's Best Dance Crew. During the years, dozens of crews and hundreds of dancers have been on the MTV show, performed as a group, performed solo, competed at Hip Hop International, World of Dance and elsewhere, competed on other TV shows (America's Got Talent, So You Think You Can Dance, and others) and been all over Youtube.
The most successful group (at least in terms of $$) has got to be Jabbawockeez. But let's broaden the definition of success. Which groups or dancers have had the greatest impact on the world of dance? Which are you most likely to see 10 years from now? Which (if any) changed your life at least a little?
Please leave some comments or send us an email. If it makes sense, I'll put together some surveys on the topic. Thanks!

Videos: This week's SYTYCD Hiphop routines plus a Must-see contemporary dance
The Top 10 show for So You Think You Can Dance featured 2 hiphop routines, though neither were the standouts for the show. That honor goes to a very emotion routine danced by Tucker Knox and SYTYCD Allstar Robert Roldon, who paired up in a moving contemporary dance about two brothers. The number was beautiful for its artistry in choreography and dance, but was personally moving in that it marked the comeback for Robert, who almost died in a car crash in 2012. Watch it here:
The hiphop this week came from a jazzy Christopher Scott routine danced by Hayley and tWitch.
And, Napoleon and Tabitha D'umo choreographed for Nico (who was eliminated at the end of the show) and All-star Comfort

Vote now! Help Ninjaboi win contest to make movie mentored by Jon Chu, Wong Fu Productions, FreddieW
From long-time BBDC reader/reviewer/friend Ninjaboi (aka Paulo:
A struggling dancer, inspired by footage captured of an epic dance cypher on a phone, begins to document his own training journey, with the goal that one day he will be the one being recorded in the eye of the cypher. His crashes, burns, and ultimate improvement are all captured on his own phone.
I recently entered a contest by Wong Fu Productions, FreddieW and Jon M Chu (Director of the Step Up Movies) called "Take Your Shot." Basically, they're working with AT&T to promote the video capabilities of the Galaxy S4. Basically people submitted pitches for a short film that would be shot entirely on a Galaxy S4. I'm lucky enough to say that after 2000 submissions, mine was chosen as one of the Top 50!
This is where you guys come in. They have opened up the Top 50 to public vote. The Top 10 vote getters will be then reviewed by the judges to select a Top 3 to be flown out to LA and be mentored by the three aforementioned film gurus in making this film. Voting Ends August 18th (Sunday) at 9PM EST
Here's my short pitch:

Congratulations to all these crews for making it to the next round. Special mention to the Rascals from USA- they had technical difficulties beginning their set, but handled it like professionals and put on a great show. Honorable mention to ExpialiDOPEST from Australia and So Unikid from France - I enjoyed their sets a lot. But my favorite routine of the division came from Canada’s FLIP. Every time I see these girls perform, I go bonkers.

1. La Salle Dance Company - Philippines 8.87
Yep, if you came from the Philippines and danced last night, then a big ‘congratulations!’ goes to you. The Philippines took the top three places in the Mega Crew Division. But the competition was very close. I saw some AMAZING routines. The Academy of Brothers (Australia) not only had a clean, well executed routine, but I especially enjoyed the fact they incorporated WWE-style wrestling maneuvers in their set (Undertaker’s Tombstone Piledriver, Stone Cold Stunner, Hulk Hogan shirt rip, and Triple H’s Pedigree). No Escape XXL from the Netherlands was another crew that had me going nuts. But my favorite routines of the night came from the Philippine Allstars (forgot to take pictures) and La Salle Dance Company. Both routines were well executed and highly entertaining. It was a beautiful, proud moment for the Philippines and all Filipinos when all three crews stood on stage at the same time in celebration of their victory.

Videos: Two Nappytabs hiphop routines on So You Think You Can Dance Top12 show
Napoleon and Tabitha D'umo choreographed bot hip hop routines that were danced on the So You Think You Can Dance Top 12 show, and both were among the show's highlights.
First, Aaron is a stagecoach robber and Jasmine a gold-digging saloon girl (the plot is obnoxious, but the dancing is extremely watch-worthy)
And, the SYTYCD men dance with a rope in an allegory about relationships or something like that:

HHI '13 USA Finals Results
Unfortunately, I missed most of the Junior Division because I was late and only caught the Rascals perform. But here are the results...
USA Juniors
BRONZE - ICONic - 7.91
SILVER - Lil Phunk - 8.10
GOLD - Rascals - 8.30
Note that ICONic consisted of members of the formerly known group the ICONic Boyz (ABDC6). Lil Phunk is the junior version of ABDC 6's Phunk Phenomenon. And the Rascals successfully defended their GOLD Medals and are the juniors of the Academy of Hype (ABDC5).
I was able to catch most of the Varsity Division. RNG's performance was the first performance of the competition that brought me up from my seat and had me geek-ing out fully. And the Brobots from Torrance, CA impressed me a lot as well.
USA Varsity
BRONZE - Prophecy - 8.42
SILVER - Brobots - 8.67
GOLD - RNG - 8.69
RNG's homage to The King of Pop and 'Smooth Criminal' was absolutely brilliant. I believe for them to be serious contenders in the Worlds Competition.
The clash for the gold in the Mega Crew Division was fierce this year. My favorite sets of the night came from Maker Empire (Los Angeles, CA), High Profile Dance (Las Vegas, NV), CDF (Suisun, CA) and, of course, Academy of Hype (Honolulu, HI).
USA Mega Crew
BRONZE - Phunk Phenomenon - 8.45
SILVER - Academy of Hype - 9.03
GOLD - Studio One - 9.20
I was actually shocked to see AoH only take the Silver medal, they easily had the best performance of the night. But then again, what do I know? And I was a bit disappointed in the Academy of Swag's set. It certainly didn't live up to last year's Gold-Winning show.
Personally, I didn't really get excited during the Adult Division until the last half of the groups performed. Common Ground from Irvine, CA did a fantastic job, but wasn't able to place for Worlds.
USA Adult
BRONZE - The Ecsntrcs - 8.90
SILVER - Illmatik Phlow - 9.12
GOLD - Mix'd Elements - 9.35
I must admit... because of their early departure from ABDC7, I foolishly didn't think much of Mix'd Elements. But now, I'm a believer. With several additions to the crew (including members of the ABDC7's Step Boys), these guys are hungry for that World Gold Medal. But Miami's Illmatik Phlow certainly shouldn't be slept on- they had a tremendous show last night. As well as The Ecsntrcs from Fullerton, CA they put on an amazing set.
And it is just getting started, too! I'll be here all week. And be sure to follow HHI on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram to see pictures from the event and get all your up to date info. All photos were taken by John Salangsang.

Are You Ready for Hip-Hop International?!?!
We are less than a week away from the biggest dance event of the year... Hip-Hop International in Las Vegas, NV. Last year I attended my first ever HHI and had an absolute blast!
