Poreotics video interview with RoxX: Life during ABDC, interesting trivia (and some freestyle)

RoxX talked to Poreotics recently and described interesting facts about each member (which member likes to fish?), how they were left car-less during their time on America's Best Dance Crew, the most challenging part of being on ABDC (having to make rapid changes to the routines each week), and life after ABDC (working with Justin Bieber, winning 2nd place at Hip Hop International 2010). The crew members also show some of their recent moves.

Exclusive interview with Rino and Maryss (Beat Freaks, Geminiz) about their experience on LXD

Rino and Maryss from Paris (members of Beat Freaks and Geminiz) played evil mermaids in the latest episode of The LXD - Tails of War. I spoke to them last week about their experience, finding out how they got involved with the project, whether they'd rather play heroes or villains, and the hardest part about the role (it's NOT what you'd expect!). They also described their activities with Beat Freaks and Geminiz, other dancing opportunities they'd like to pursue, their regrets at not getting to perform with Michael Jackson, and more. Listen in!

Watch The LXD 'Tails of War' (ft. Beat Freaks Rino and Maryss) now

This week's episode of the LXD introduces a secret weapon of the evil Ox: evil dancing ex-mermaids who steal men's souls. May sound strange but the dancing is intense. Among the two dancers are Maryss from Paris and Rino, who work together on Beat Freaks and Geminiz. I'll post an exclusive podcast with them later today.

Help me create an ABDC trivia contest!

Thanks to everyone who submitted ideas for new contests for this website -- there were many interesting entries. For a number of reasons, I've chosen to delay the more labor-intensive contests (e.g., asking for video responses to weekly challenges) though I would like to run those in the future.

Many people wanted a challenging trivia contest on America's Best Dance Crew, its contestants and personalities. But I need your help in creating it. I need questions to pose each week that are 1. interesting, 2. non-obvious, 3. not easily answered through Web searches, and 4. verifiable. If you or your friends have some suggestions, please email them to ABDCContest@gmail.com. Please include the question, answer, and the source I can use to verify it.

What's in it for you? If I use one of your questions, you'll obviously know the answer, which will increase your chances of winning. If you've got a LOT of good questions, I'll disqualify you from the contest but give you a $10-20 iTunes gift certificate. I'll start the contest once I receive and verify 8-12 good questions.

Poreotics performed at the University of Florida on November 5, 2010 for the closing  of the Asian Arts & Entertainment Festival: Asian Kaleidoscope Month 2010. It was outside 9-11pm and at the mid 50s..this is cold for us). I got them to sign the shirt that I won [in the BloggingBestDanceCrew.com Blow-up contest] and a small poster. All and all we had fun." Here's the video from the ABCtilly Youtube Channel filmed by someone who sat directly in front of Perezoverride. Thanks too to Ninjaboi for this alternate view of the show

Demi Lovato goes to rehab after punching Beat Freak Shorty

According to TMZ, Demi Lovato decided she needed to go into rehab after she gave a black eye to Alex Welch (Shorty) of the Beat Freaks (America's Best Dance Crew Season 3). "We're told Welch -- who had a pretty nasty shiner from the incident -- has been talking to lawyers and is considering legal action. Both Demi and Shorty are on the Jonas Brothers tour.  Click here to see some pictures of Shorty and her black eye.

I am reporting about this because it's in the media. I'd much rather Shorty get attention because she's a fantastic dancer. Watch this:

Video: New collabo featuring dancing from BABDC readers, Andy (Quest Crew), Hybrid of Freedom

Ninjaboi created a new collaboration video starring BloggingBestDanceCrew.com readers (Names are Overrated, Poppin iSik, Team Vibe Philippines, Dance, Maxxann, Kit, Kid Bowser, HiddenPsyche, Bgurl Ethel, and Ninjaboi) and special guests Andy (Rocket Man) Luo of Quest Crew and Hybrids of Freedom Krumpers (as well as some stills of other BABDC community members. Here's Ninjaboi's description:
After Isaac's great first BABDC collab, I was inspired to take up the mantle and attempt to match his efforts with a second collab and showcase the talents of our readers and the dance groups they are affiliated with.  We began planning this video in late summer, beginning by seeing who was interested in participating.  After we had a rough idea of that, we voted on a single song we would all dance to, and "Fancy Footwork" won out.  While there was  originally a slightly different, more ambitious concept (instead of merely doing a slideshow of each individual, to cycle through each dancer multiple times as the song was playing, similar to a music video, possibly including some lip synching; in addition, there was a planned introduction that never came to fruition), various circumstances beyond our control led certain individuals to be unable to participate, and others to limiting their contribution, leading a rethinking of the project.  Over time, individuals submitted their videos to me and i redubbed them and put them together.  We were even able to get a few celebrity guest appearances in there thanks to connections made on this website.

In the end, this is the final product.  While the credits take up just under half of the total video time, I still hope that you sit and watch it though to the end, as there is a lot of unused footage that I wished to show.  I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed putting it together for you all!

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS:

Special thanks to our special guest stars the Hybrid of Freedom krumpers and Andy Luo of Quest
Special thanks to Maxxann for being able to get them to contribute! Also thanks to her for getting members of Team Vibe to perform
Special thanks to the dancers in the video for being unafraid to express themselves via dance online.
Special thanks also goes out to everyone who we talked to about putting together the video but couldn't be part of it, but still supported us regardless.
Special thanks to Nancy for being such a great moderator of the site and making it a place where we were able to meet each other.
And finally...
Thanks to YOU the READERS to give this site a reason to continue to exist.  Thank YOU for being interested in ABDC and Hip Hop dance.

If you're interested in joining the next collab, leave a comment with your email, or message my Youtube profile or my Vimeo account.  It won't be for a while or so (especially if ABDC 6 starts up early next year).  If you don't think you can dance, I hope this video inspires you to start.  I just started myself as we were starting this video.  If you do dance, I hope that between now and the next collab you keep improving.

Dance to express, not to impress

Watch Ninjaboi's documentary on the past, present and future of hip hop dancing

Ninjaboi created a documentary called "From Street Corner to Webcam: The History of the Underground Mainstream of Hip Hop Dance".  It covers the history of the dance form, how it has evolved, its portrayal on TV and in movies, the pull between art and commerce, the future, and other topics. It's long (48 minutes) but really worth watching for its great clips, thoughtful analysis, and Ninjaboi's dancing at the end of the film. He's even prepared FAQs about it -- click here to access them.

Podcast with Ringmasters Slick and Nugget -- what it's like to work on The LXD

When The LXD wanted to scare the bejeezus out of its viewers for the Halloween episode of The LXD, they called on Ringmaster members Nicholas "Slick" Stewart and Adedamola "Nugget" Orisagbemi. Watch the episode here to see what I mean.

I spoke to Slick and Nugget earlier this week, where they talk about how they got involved with the LXD, the process for choreographing the episode, why they are such great villains on the show, their other work on America's Got Talent and Step Up 3D, and their goals going forward. One note: their shoutouts at the end of the podcast include Michelle McNulty, the casting director who was instrumental in getting them their shot on America's Best Dance Crew Season 3. DirtfaceX's field report (with video) on Jungle Boogie's New York workshop

DirtfaceX attended Jungle Boogie's NY workshop in October 2010 and filed this report:
"Last night, Jungle Boogie held their first ever NYC Workshop at Steps on Broadway.  They began with a 'cranking' routine.  I didn't participate, and it was a good thing too, b/c it was INTENSE.  It was high energy and super fast.  I also found it interesting that ALL of JB taught the workshop together (w/ the exception of Zebra, who sat out and watched).  Unfortunately, I wasn't able to get video of the first routine.  For the second half of the workshop, they taught a more smoother style called "Jigging" (i think).  It was a fun, energetic routine and it looked like everyone was having a blast learning the steps.  Dancer or not, I suggest taking a workshop with them - it's all about 'good times' and makes for a great cardio workout.  In the end, they finished with a 'Jungle Boogie' cool down led by BeeJay.  Afterwards, everyone hung around and took pictures with the crew.  Raqui busts out some James Brown and a dance cypher breaks out!  Unfortunately again, I didn't take video of the cyph because I was clapping along, enjoying it.  I spoke with their manager and according to her, Jungle Boogie shirts (!!!!!) will be available on Threaderstyle next month.  I said my 'goodbyes' and thanked them for coming to NY.  Keep a lookout for Jungle Boogie on MTV's Silent Library in the weeks to come!  YULLLE!!!!"

Here's a video of the workshop from DirtfaceX Youtube Channel. Thanks DirtfaceX!

Watch The LXD The Secrets of Ra Episodes 1 and 2 here now: "The Legion" and "Lessons"

The official description of The LXD: The Secrets of Ra: "The epic saga charges forward with THE LXD: SECRETS OF THE RA as the forces of good and evil go head to head towards an explosive showdown and true heroes are revealed. Trevor Drift (Luis "Bboy Luigi" Rosado) will understand the sacrifice necessary to fulfill a family legacy, the Dark Doctor's (John "Jrock" Nelson) shocking past reveals the motives behind his madness, and a powerful new villain, The Wave (Ricardo "Frantick" Rodriguez, Jr.) unleashes the might of Organization X.  Each new chapter delves further into the LXD mythology as the mystery continues to unfold. Featuring all your favorite heroes from Season One including Sp3cimen (Chadd "Madd Chadd" Smith), Elliot Hoo (Glee's Harry Shum, Jr.), and Ninjato (Galen Hooks) as they redefine what it means to be extraordinary."

Video: 9 year old Bgirl Spinderella - head spin for more than a minute

Reader Dance filmed part of the BBoy Evolution show on October 16 in Brooklyn. Here's part of her report about a highlight: "Here is a clip of 9 year old B-Girl Spinderalla of Chi-Town Finest Breakers... She spun on her head for over 1 minute and the entire room went crazy. I stood behind them and in some parts of the clip you can see their backs, but at 0:57 her brothers sit down and you can clearly see her. At 1:13 her dad gives her a camera phone while she is spinning and she takes pictures of the crowd while spinning on her head. At the end of the video you can see the effect she had on the crowd, which was a very fun event.  Chi-Town Finest Breakers consists of B-Girl Spinderalla and her brothers Bboy Lil Ozone, Bboy Lil Turbo, and Bboy Crazzy Legz. Their dad is DJ Westside." Disney's Dance Crew recently opened at Disneyland. As described in the OC Register, it is choreographed by Tessandra Chavez of “So You Think You Can Dance” and Dave Scott, who works on SYTYCD and the “Step Up” movies.

"The music will be a fresh arrangements and mash-up of Disney tunes...The Disney show will feature two dance crews who are competing against each other when they are interrupted by Mickey Mouse, who reveals his own hip moves and brings the two sides together. “It showcases some really cool, new, hip styles” said [Randy] Wojcik (show director with Walt Disney Parks and Resort’s creative entertainment). Thanks for the link, Numa Nash!

Videos: Keep It Live battles including Mary Poppins (original We are Heroes member)

At the Keep It Live jam on October 2 in Norwalk, CA, there were dancers from  Canada, Japan, Arizona, San Diego, and Los Angeles. The street dance event had a 1-on-1 poppin' battle, a waacking showcase, and a film clip review of legendary popper Poppin' Taco (teacher for Michael Jackson) and robot duo Shields and Yarnell.  There will be more Keep it Live events in the next few months; keep track of them on the Keep It Live Facebook page.

Loads of good videos from this event, including the Popping finals battle between Jaekwong and Slim Boogie Part One and Part Two, and the Waacking Showcase by Raquel Cabrera. Since this website spotlights Ameria's Best Dance Crew, we'll show you the popping battle between Mary Poppins (an original member of We are Heroes who did not appear on ABDC but competed with the girl crew at Hip Hop International 2009) and Nikodemus. You can see much more of the action at KeepItLiveProduction Youtube Channel.

Dtrix has been part of Quest (America's Best Dance Crew Season 3 champions) and on the So You Think You Can Dance All-Stars show and tour, but he is still not one of NigaHiga's BEST crew. But, he's aiming to fix that. Here's his no-handstand, Avatar, Jerk. and he stops messing around at 2:00. Thanks for the tip, DirtfaceX!

Another chance to win a shirt/Itunes certificate -- help design the next BABDC contest

Over the last 6 months, BloggingBestDanceCrew.com had two great contests designed by readers -- the ABDC Blowup Contest created by The Fourth ABDC Judge and the ABDC Master Mix Contest created by DirtfaceX. I'd love to start another contest while we wait for news of America's Best Dance Crew 6 and would like to collaborate with a reader again.

So, leave a comment if you have some good ideas for a contest that we can run here. If I want to hear more, I'll leave you a message asking you to email me the details. The contest creators get the same prize as the contest winners -- an ABDC T-shirt of his/her choice or an Itunes gift certificate worth up to $30.

America's Best Dance Crew coming to UK gyms; article mentions ABDC Season 6

America's Best Dance Crew is the inspiration of a new dance workout to be instituted at Virgin Active Studios on the UK. This article in The Independent gives the details for the workout program. In addition, it contains this quote from Gillian Reeves, National Group Exercise Manager at Virgin Active: "The MTV Urban Workout was inspired by the hit US show Randy Jackson presents America’s Best Dance Crew. The show is going in to its sixth series and sees ‘crews’ battle for prize spot in an X-Factor style talent show. We were inspired by the fact that the show sees real people from all walks of life take part."

Watch Remy D in ourr ABDC Master Mix Tie-Breaker Solution. And Congratulations Sunset!

Our ABDC Master Mix Contest is over! After 12 weeks of America's Best Dance Crew clips from District 78 mixes, a fiendish sudden death round featuring 30 3-second clips, and a tie-breaker question, Sunset has emerged the winner.  I cannot thank DirtfaceX enough for coming up with this contest idea and making all the videos -- I hope all of you enjoyed it as much as I did!

Here's the answer to the tie-breaker video question. Sunset guessed that there were 30 shirts, which was the closest guess to the true number of 33. Watch as Remy D of Part Time Models does some breaking, then shows each of DirtfaceX's ABDC shirts! If any of you have more than 33 shirts, let me know/ show us a photo!

Watch: Vogue Evolution's Leiomy in Willow Smith's "Whip My Hair" Video

Willow Smith's music video for "Whip my Hair" is catchy and cute -- it'll definitely be a hit. Another reason I like it -- Leiomy from Vogue Evolution (America's Best Dance Crew Season 4) makes a cameo starting at 2:32. Thanks for the tip, Jai and mic!

This is it: ABDC Master Mix Tie-breaker featuring Remy D (Part Time Models)!

Since so many of you have devoted major time on our ABDC Master Mix contest for the last several months, we thought we'd end it with major style. Remy D of Part Time Models (a crew that auditioned for America's Best Dance Crew Season 5 and competed at Kollaboration and Elements X ) tie-breaks for our tie-breaker. You gotta watch this one even if you're not in it to win it.
THE RULES FOR OUR TIE-BREAKER:
1. Only the 14 people who have perfect scores are finalists and eligible to win. Click here to see the list.
2. DirtfaceX (the creator of this contest and all these videos) collects ABDC crew shirts. He has a LOT of them. In the second part of this video, Remy dances with ALL the shirts on.
3. The challenge: guess how many Tshirts DirtfaceX has in his collection. The person who comes closest to the answer without going over wins either their own Tshirt (we're not depleting DirtfaceX's collection!) or an Itunes gift certificate (hopefully to buy some District78 but it's up to you)
4. Email your answer to ABDCContest@gmail.com. I've enabled comments so you can compliment Remy D, but please don't leave your numeric guesses in the comments field.
5. If there are 2 answers that are tied for closest guess, I'll award 2 prizes. If there are more than 2 tied for closest guess, the winner will be the one with the email time-stamp closest to a time that I've already randomly chosen (between 00:01 and 12:59)
6. Deadline: Sunday October 17 at midnight
Thanks again to District 78 for creating all the America's Best Dance Crew mixes we've enjoyed during the contest and to DirtfaceX for his creative work on this contest.

ABDC Master Mix Sudden Death results: 14 people with perfect scores!

DirtfaceX and I were hoping to have a winner this week after the ABDC Sudden Death Round featuring 30 3-second clips. Most of the people with 22-24 points in the Master Mix contest sent in entries, and 16 of them got all 30 points! One perfect answer was received within 2 hours of the contest posting; another was received at the last hour. Of those, 14 people had cumulative perfect scores of 54, so they will be eligible to compete in our tie-breaker tomorrow. The rest of you will also want to watch the tie-breaker video, which will feature no music clips but some great breakdancing!

Here are the Sudden Death answers. Click here to see the list of people eligible for tomorrow's tie-breaker.  Congratulations to all of you! And, I have a question for you (and for others who undertook the Sudden Death Challenge): how did you approach the Sudden Death challenge? Did you do it by yourself or with the help of friends? Did any of you use music recognition software? Your answers will not penalize you -- we're just curious!

Thanks again to District 78 for creating all these mixes and to DirtfaceX for the amazing videos (including tomorrow's tour de force!)
