Instant Noodles @ Red Bull BC One Cypher

Red Bull BC One is one of the biggest bboy events in the world. But ever wonder how someone gets up there? There are National Qualifiers. However, to even make it to the National level, you need to dominate your local Cyphers. 


This Saturday, there will be a San Diego Qualifying Cypher to determine who will go to the US Nationals at Chicago. Instant Noodles's Geo has been invited to compete for this chance. New ABDC 7 trailer naming superstars, showing auditions and crews

MTV released a second trailer for America's Best Dance Crew Season 7. This one names some of the superstars whose music will be used (including Britney Spears, Madonna, Rihanna, Flo Rida and Pitbull), shows some of the auditioners, and spotlights Fanny Pak as a returning crew.

Dance Hero Japan - Season 2 Episode 3

Yesterday we reviewed the episode we missed of Japan's version of ABDC, Dance@Hero Japan! Today we'll go over the most recent episode, episode 3 for this second season.


With this episode we have the final results of the season, with Beat Buddy Boi taking 1st place this season, after finishing 2nd in season 1 to Time Machine. 


-Beat Buddy Boi (430 points total) swept the compeition with winning first place each week. This performance showed their determination to win, using the trophy as a prop, similar to the ABDC3 collab between Quest and Beat Freaks, and presented in a style similar to Super Cr3w's final performance in ABDC2. However, the musical selection here was very unique, especially for a crew of their style.
-ISOPP (270 points total), while in a distant second place, had probably my favorite performance this season. They not only had excellent moves, they also incorporated live beatboxing from one of their own crew members and danced to that. Very impressive. 
-Vigorous Ladies (200 points total), while not the first impressive all female crew we saw, proved they can get BUCK and GRIMY for sure. Be sure to check them out.
-Ms. Creative (120 points total), while also an all female crew, they have a very different feel from Vigorous Ladies, more similar to the smooth Jabbawockeez than the buck Street Kingdom or Request. 
-Tokyo Beat Surf (120 points total), concludes their story with some dope choreography, and a bit of a twist, both in plot and music choice. While I think they could have danced more, it was entertaining nontheless to see this story come to its conclusion.
-Bear Knuckle (90 points total) unfortunately didn't do much better than last season, and while their routine concepts are relatively bland, they still have solid dancing, going with a full out ninja theme. 
-Aerstix (10 points total) may not be understood by all, but their contortionist bboy choreography is nothing to sneeze at.

Today's the Day - Daniel Cloud Campos Feature Film Kickstarter

For those of you who follow this blog in the off season, you probably know we're big fans of Daniel "Cloud" Campos. Member of Skillmethodz crew, LXD member, Step Up dancer, and filmmaker, he's produced entertaining videos such as "The Music Box," "Like Mike," and "Welcome Home." Now, he's ready to take the next step and make a full length feature film, titled "Today's the Day", in the style of a Fred Astaire, Gene Kelly, Donald O'Connor, and Charlie Chaplin. In order to pitch this film to studios, he's planning on making a short film. You can check out the plot details in the video below. They're planning on raising $25,000. As of writing, they are at about $15,000.

Dance Hero Japan - Season 2 Episode 2

While we have 21 days left until ABDC7 premeires (not that anyone's counting down...), dance goes on. Specifically for this post, in Japan! Japan's version of ABDC, called Dance@Hero Japan! features 9 crews who compete in a pretty different style than ABDC. Crews have 2 minutes of free choreography, and get points based on judges's rankings, as well as video views on social media sites. The crews with the highest cumulative score at the end of the season wins!


We covered the first episode of Season 2, but episode two seems to have slipped past us somehow. Today we'll have a quick recap of what we think were notable performances form that episode:
-Bear Knuckle's swing music routine showed a combination of story telling, swag, and crazy bboy-capoeria fighting.
-Tokyo Beat Surf has some hard hitting popping choreography while telling part 2 of their Karate Kid-inspired story.
-Beat Buddy Boi, playing off their name, dances to a mix of Queen with a bit of Team iLuminate, and showed why they continue to be one of the top contenders, since season one.
-Ms Creative shows how they are a mix of We Are Heroes, Request ,and Jabbaawockeez, and continue their recurring theme of grimy all female choreography in a dreamscape. 
-Aerstix Side demonstrated their contortionist bboy choreography to a classical music theme. 
-ISOPP were decked out in traditional Japanese garb, and danced to what appears to be Naruto music, a la Kinjaz

NAOTV Episode 20: Empire the Crew's callback routine

Hey there BBDC! While the upcoming season boasts one of the most solid lineups in ABDC history, there were still many great crews that didn't make the cut. One of them was fan favorite Empire the Crew from Guam. One of the last cuts in the selection process, this strong crew of young dancers showed their stuff performing to the D78 Mastermix of N*ggas In Paris, the West Coast callback mix. Best of luck to this crew in the future!

We will run two contests during America's Best Dance Crew Season 7 which will extend from now through the finale. The prize for each will be a Tshirt of your size and choice, value up to $35 or an iTunes gift certificate worth $30..

The Top 4 contest: Submit the names of the top 4 crews -- in the order that they'll finish. For example, in Season 6, the winning entry would have read " FINAL 4: 1. IaMmE 2.  ICONic Boyz 3. Phunk Phenomenon 4. Street Kingdom" Note: if you change your mind, you can enter again the next round but we will only accept the FIRST entry from each commenter each round (PLEASE DO NOT USE MULTIPLE IDENTITIES!!!). The prize goes to the first person to get it right, based on the week they submit the answer. If more than one person submits the right answer in that same week, we'll employ a tiebreaker rule to be determined.

To enter: Each week, we'll publish a new post for this contest. When the weekly post is up, add a comment with the names of the final 4, specifying the final order. Subsequent weeks' entries will be accepted from Fridays (once I put up the new contest post) until 6pm ET the following Tuesday (before the next show is taped). Instantly Derezzed - Instant Noodles at ElecTRONica

Word has it that Instant Noodles (ABDC6) will be performing at Disneyland's "ElecTRONica," joining the ranks of ABDC alumni who have performed, including Kaba Modern, Poreotics, We Are Heroes, and Team iLuminate (not ABDC but with ABDC alum!).According to their facebook page, they will be performing at 8pm and 8:30pm on March 16th and 17th. - The Movement is a new UK dance group, with 16 dancers fusing dance disciplines from street to contemporary/ballet. TFC (The Filipino Channel) recently aired a feature on Arnel Calvario, founder of Kaba Modern. The segment includes dance clips and interviews. He talks about why he founded Kaba Modern, his role as manager of  America's Best Dance Crew alums Kaba Modern (Season 1), Fanny Pak (Season 2), and Beat Freaks (Season 3), his current involvement with Culture Shock, and his new project to create a community arts center for underprivileged youth.

For the last 6 months the "ZAPP Academy of Dance" (which is the home studio for "Z-Train", a group that auditioned for ABDC season 4 and appeared at HHI in 2009 & 2010) has been filming numerous hip-hop and lyrical concept videos.  These videos are being edited together into a feature length dance concept movie titled "Through the Lens" that will premiere at a movie theater here in Eugene in April 2012. Something different but important -- watch this video and Support the Invisible Children cause!

Here's a message that needs to be spread as far and as fast as possible. Invisible Children is a group that is trying to stop Joseph Kony, a Kenyan terrorist whose Lord's Resistance Army has abducted over 66,000 children to fight in his army, and whose warfare resulted the displacement of over 2 million people. Kony has been named #1 on the World's Most Wanted Fugitive list, but there's incredibly little awareness of him and LRA in this country. Something completely different -- I won an NPR game!

I usually keep personal things out of this site, but am making an exception today. Last night, I attended a taping of NPR's Ask Me Another, a new quiz/humor radio show that will be premiering later this year. The show is really funny (last night's guest was Simon Doonan, who had the audience in stitches) and features some clever games. One game on this episode was 'Pen it Like Porter', where audience members were given the opportunity to update and spoof the lyrics to Cole Porter's 1934 classic "You're the Top". My entry was chosen as a finalist. and I had the privilege of having it performed by Jonathan Coulton (whose other main job lately is opening for They Might Be Giants). Video: Dance Off 2012 SM Manila Preliminaries, including footage of the prelim winners

Dance Off 2012 was held in Manila Philippines. This video from pacificeastevents Youtube shows many of the dance groups including the top 4. It's a little unclear to me if this is the finals or there will be another dance-off after this -- please leave a comment if you have more info on this event. But there are some powerful groups that competed that you should watch.

NAOTV Episode 17: Keone and Mari "Meeting"

Here it is! The final installment of the Keone and Mari trilogy, entitled "Meeting". Keone and Mari alone are already great choreographers, but together they are something beautiful. Aside from Keone and Mari's partner choreography, another creative aspect of the video were the dancing silhouettes that highlighted Keone and Mari's movements. Amazing work!

Jerome 'Jeromeskee' Aparis (member of ABDC4's Massive Monkees and of Rocksteady Crew) teaches windmill skills on a new Iphone app. Click here for the review from ISnoops. This is a great use for apps, and there are many more on the Iphone market, but the quality varies. Are there are other recommendations for apps to teach hiphop dance skills?

Video for JabbaWockeez SB's new song "FNG", from new "Privileged" EP

SB from JabbaWockeeZ (America's Best Dance Crew Season 1 winners) released his first EP called "Privileged" on February 28, 2012. The EP features many worthy cuts, including "We Just Made It" (the song used on the ABDC Season 6 finale show), "Travelin" which was produced by DJ Replay (Multi-Grammy Award winner), and two songs ("F N G" and "We Just Made It") that will be featured in the new movie "Project X". Tosh.0's latest episode riffed on a video of a guy breakdancing, only to be told by his mother that he'll "destroy his body before he gets up to those little Asians' level'. Chris Trondsen (who became friends with the crew during America's Best Dance Crew Season 6) interviewed Mikey and Madison, and had the boys answer fan questions (Part 1, Part 2, Part 3).
