ABDC April Madness: JC Chasez, Round 2 Day 1

Though it's now April, we are still working through  ABDC March Madness (aka the Big Boy Challenge), pitting hard-hitting competition from 32 primo quotes by Lil Mama, JC Chasez, Shane Sparks, and Lil Mama against each other to determine the 'Best ABDC Judge Comment EVER'. Now we're into Round 2, where we narrow down the best from each judge. Each day we'll give you 2 quotes; vote every day for your favorite. Video: KM's Arnel Calvario talks about ABDC5 top 3, Hype's 'call-outs', ABDC's Judges and more

After the taping of ABDC's Hip Hop Nation and Last Chance Challenge, Chris Trondsen and Fanny Pak's Glenda Morales (and Pacific Rim's Angelica Alumia) hung out outside a little longer to talk with Arnel Calvario (founder/choreographer for Kaba Modern and manager for Kaba Modern, Fanny Pak, and Beat Freaks). Here's the first part of the interview, where Arnel and Glenda get lively in discussing reactions who was best on this episode (as opposed to the season), Blueprint's performance given the shoulder injury of one member and its implications for the show, opinion on the content of the different ABDC judges' critiques, and how Hype's calling outdissing other crews in their performances was part of hip hop culture.

Recaps (with videos) for ABDC's Hip Hop Nation and Last Chance Challenges

  • At We'll Fix it In, Howard and LeKeith coin a few choice phrases (the Cutout Challenge, Swagger Juice Energy Drink) along with their biting commentary and backstage perspective
  • AC Slater thinks Blueprint Cru deserves to win given the episodes' dances and the last chance challenge performances should have been longer
  • Too Interesting for Twitter gives Poreotix the prize based on Tetreotix
  • Spoil the Ending felt only lukewarm about the two Last Chance Challenge performances
  • Video reviews by Taizuke and ACONNECTIONTV
  • LA Times has an excellent review by Kaba Modern founder/choreographer Arnel Calvario. They also post video interviews of Arnel with Hype 5-0 and Blueprint Cru (including information on the shoulder injury of one member), as well as a video of Swizz Beatz talking about ABDC -- why he participated in this episode, how hard the crews worked, and why he is a fan of the show

"The 4th ABDC Judge" renders judgement on Hip Hop Nation/Last Chance Challenge

So this is it, the final 3 crews just tore up the stage and left their hearts, blood, sweat, and tears on that stage and it really shows. It’s horrible to see any crew go, but at the final 3, it’s the most heartbreaking. But, the show must go on, and so must the reviews. It comes down to this.
-Blueprint vs. Poreotix
-East vs. West
-Co-ed crew vs. All male crew
-Foreigners vs. Natives

So, what happened this week with Hype 5-0, Blueprint Cru, and Poreotix? Click here to read his detailed review of the performances in America's Best Dance Crew's Hip Hop Challenge and Last Chance Challenge, a well as a Season recap. Thanks '4th ABDC Judge'!

Last week for the Elimination Challenge/Bottom 2 Contest -- enter now!

We're almost done with the elimination challenge for America's Best Dance Crew, where readers competed by predicting who would be in the bottom 2 and who would be eliminated.  The person with the highest cumulative score for Season 5 will win an ABDC crew shirt of their choice and size (up to $35 retail).

For the finale, give us the final placement. For example, for ABDC4's Finale, an entry worth 2 points would have read:  Winner: We are Heroes. Also: include your answer to 2 tie-breaker questions: # of votes cast in ABDC Season 5, # of votes cast in final week. If neither is announced, I'll randomly pick a winner.

Here's the rules. PLEASE REMEMBER TO USE THE SAME DISTINCTIVE NAME EACH WEEK SINCE VOTES ARE CUMULATIVE!  Right now, Ace, David Jason, Del, and Jai are tied, but it is possible for 4 other people to sneak in and win. Deadline: Midnight, Tuesday April 6.

Video: Hype 5-0 describe what they would have done in the Last Chance Challenge

Chris Trondsen and Fanny Pak's Glenda Morales talk to ABDC third place finishers Hype 5-0 after they were eliminated on America's Best Dance Crew's Hip Hop Challenge. They talk about the Last Chance Challenge they didn't get to perform (which included tiki torches and wicked moves), their appreciation for their fans, what's next for them, and shoutouts. Endless thanks to World of Dance, our partner for the ABDC tapings this season.

ABDC March Madness in April: Shane Sparks Round 2

Though it's now April, we are still working through  ABDC March Madness (aka the Big Boy Challenge), pitting hard-hitting competition from 32 primo quotes by Lil Mama, JC Chasez, Shane Sparks, and Lil Mama against each other to determine the 'Best ABDC Judge Comment EVER'. Now we're into Round 2, where we narrow down the best from each judge. Each day we'll give you 2 quotes; vote every day for your favorite. Click here for rules and explanation.  Today, we choose between Round One favorites from Shane Sparks:

Video: Ninja attack interview with Blueprint Cru

Chris Trondsen and Glenda Morales wanted to make sure that we spoke to ALL the crews this week, especially since the voting would be going on for days. The MTV people asked (or insisted) that they leave (it was getting late!) but Chris and Glenda stayed until they were literally kicked out of the studio so they could congratulate Blueprint Cru and ask them a few brief reader questions on how it felt to get to the Final 2, what they had to give up for the show, and more. Pacific Rim jumped in too, so that we could get some footage for the Blueprint fans.

Send some Love to Hype 5-0!

We have been fans of Hype 5-0 since watching their audition video since America's Best Dance Crew Season 3. Their mix of b-boy and hip hop with touches of Hawaiian moves brought a freshness to the stage. They built a huge fan base because of both their dancing and their off-stage personalities.  Season 5 had some of the best crews in the history of ABDC and Hype 5-0 proved --week after week -- they were worthy being near the top. Their performance in the Hip Hop Nation Challenge was one of our favorite performances for the entire season -- they went out on top of their game. We'll miss them, and hope to see a lot more of them in videos and live performances.

This post is only for positive comments about Hype 5-0. If you have anything else to say, please take it to the Party Room/Critics Corner.

Video: Poreotix answer more fan questions: boxers vs. briefs; doomsday plans

Poreotix talked to Chris Trondsen and Fanny Pak's Glenda Morales after Poreotix learned they made it to the Final Two on America's Best Dance Crew Season 5. They talk about what it feels like to get to the final 2 and answer fan questions including boxers vs briefs vs commando, what they'd do at the end of the world (sinning, church and ABDC tours), and what they want to say to the fans. Here's a link to the quiz "Which Poreotix Member are you?" Much thanks to World of Dance (our partner for the ABDC tapings) which is busy lining up many of the ABDC5 favorites for their upcoming live shows.

Review from the Pressbox - Chris Trondsen on ABDC5's Hip Hop Nation and Last Chance Challenges

Right off the bat, the show starts off with a shock.  No one was ready for Blueprint Cru to be the one that was safe and received the most votes. Not that they don't deserve it, all three of the remaining crews are amazing and deserve to be in the finale, but the crew most people thought were going to have that free pass to the finale didn't receive it. Blueprint were shocked as well it seemed because they couldn't believe they had the most votes but they were also happy to be there.

The two final crews that went head to head for the judge's decision and a spot in the finale dealt with it two way different ways both on stage and behind it.  Poreotix was all smiles, relaxed, joking, funny, etc and their routine showed it.  Hype 5-0 was serious and acted as if they were going into a real battle.  And the choreography in each crew's first performance reflected it.  It was the first time a crew actually called out the other two crews as if they were in a battle in their first performance.

District 78 Music Mixes for Last Chance Challenges (including unplayed mix for Eliminated Crew)

District 78 has posted the master mixes for America's Best Dance Crew's Hip Hop Nation and Last Chance Challenges. Of most interest are the SwizzBeat-derived mixes for all the crews, including what we didn't get to hear for Hype 5-0. After hearing this, I can't wait to see this performance, which they may dance at World of Dance on April 10.

Regarding autoclick and other 'power voting' mechanisms: It says in the ABDC FAQs that

The producers reserve the right to remove any identified 'power dialing' votes. These procedures apply to toll-free, sms and online voting"

Party Room/Critics Corner now open - Join in!

The Party Room/Critics Corner for ABDC 5's Hip Hop Nation and Last Chance Challenges is now open! Join many other like-minded people (or people totally different from you) to cogitate about America's Best Dance Crew Season as it wends its way into extinction. IMPORTANT: If you want to write a long comment, write in in NotePad or Word and then paste it into the comments field. Otherwise, all your work may disappear if someone posts something new while you're in the middle of writing.

After the show is over: The party has just started, so stick around for more action, reaction, and interaction. Did the right 2 crews get into the finale? How does this final 2 compare to other seasons? The REAL Chris Trondsen's Preview from the Press Tent! - what you WON'T See on TV tonight!

Here is part of the REAL Chris Trondsen's preview about ABDC's Hip Hop Nation and Last Chance Challenge. Most of it will be included tomorrow, since it was difficult to write about tonight's show without including some spoilers. Be sure to come back tomorrow and read the rest, since it will include many things you wan't see on the show:

One thing you won't see when watching this week's episode is that after announced safe and automatically in the finale, the crew that got the most votes didn't sit down and relax and celebrate like you might think they would. No, they were in the back where their crew flag is and practicing and training hard and going over the choreography getting ready for the Last Chance Challenge. They were like a machine, no smiles, and you almost wouldn't know that they had just received most of America's votes. They were going over it to make sure it was perfect.

Click here for two more things about tonight's show that you won't see on TV. Thanks Chris!

Preview from the Pressbox - Cris Turnson on ABDC5's Hip Hop Nation/Last Chance Challenge

Hi guys, this was the best week ever. I know I keep saying that but I mean it this week. The press didn't get to do any backstage interviews before the show this week because they were busy fireproofing the stage. If you think you've seen fire on ABDC before, wait until you see what they have planned this week.

The press also had trouble getting through because of the protests from Canadian separatist people, Hawaii for the people protesters, and the people who heard that Americas Best Dance Crew is going to ban Asians in the future. It's not true, I don't think.

Things to watch for:
  • Omarion and JC argue over whether the girls in Hype or Blueprint is hotter and if that should matter because they need some hot girls in the Finale
  • Poreotix does tutting
  • The hot girls who sit behind Mario start fighting just before the elimination because 3 of them are wearing the same dress
  • Legendary 7 gets an unexpected wildcard and competes in the Last Chance Challenge
Here's some outtake footage for you. And watch tonight, it's the best show ever.

Video: Hok (Quest) and Phillip Chbeeb - 0 Views

Quest's Hok and Marvelous Motion's Phillip Chbeeb (both veterans of So You Think You Can Dance) collaborate on a short performance called 0 Views, from Pacman's Youtube Channel. Thanks for the tip, Roy!

March Madness in April: Lil Mama Round 2, Day 2 (of 2)

Though it's now April, we are still working through  ABDC March Madness (aka the Big Boy Challenge), pitting hard-hitting competition from 32 primo quotes by Lil Mama, JC Chasez, Shane Sparks, and Lil Mama against each other to determine the 'Best ABDC Judge Comment EVER'. Video: Crews talk about the strain of this week's challenges and the joys of fan support

MTV Remote Control posted a video showing the ABDC Final 3 crews talking backstage, interspersed with a few dance moves (including a snippet of Poreotix last chance challenge practice). They all seem quiet, introspective, and tired as they talk about the difficulty of learning new steps and preparing two dances and how much they appreciate the support from their fans.

Join us tonight for Live Blogging, the Critics Corner/party room, and more!

At 10pm ET, Del and I'll be doing live play-by-play while watching the show, so feel free to tune in and make fun of me or get a sneak preview of the action (for those of you from the West Coast/Canada/India or other ABDC-deprived zones).

    Wednesday open thread

There seems to be reader demand for a place to leave comments on a variety of ABDC and dance topics -- an open party room of sorts. So, let's try it out here. Ground rules and suggestions:
    • Try to have SOME connection to dance and ABDC, even if it's a little tenuous!
    • No obscenity, no blatant spoilers!
    • If you want to write a long comment, write in in NotePad or Word and then paste it into the comments field. Otherwise, all your work may disappear if someone posts something new while you're in the middle of writing.
    • Echo insists they've fixed the problem of disappearing comments. If you have trouble tonight, please EMAIL me (bloggingBestDanceCrew@gmail.com) so I can get back to them for further fixing

Video: Step Up 3D Trailer -- "One Move can set a whole generation free"

John Chu released the trailer for Step up 3D today. Not sure about the dialogue (including the line "One move can set a whole generation free") but the dancing looks amazing. Thanks for the link, PerezOverride!

Howard & LeKeith (We'll Fix it In) attend the ABDC Taping: 3 clues and a major spoiler

We'll Fix it In impresarios Howard and LeKeith attended the taping of America's Best Dance Crew's Hip Hop Nation/Last Chance Challenge taping as press. I can't wait to see this week's recap from them! Here's their first report:

The penultimate episode of the season always promises surprises and high intensity performances, and Season 5 was no exception.Unfortunately, we can't really talk about the performances without
totally spoiling the results.  So instead, we give you:

    3 CREWS, 3 CLUES
Clue 1: One Crew made that booty clap.
Clue 2: One Crew threw down the gauntlet by busting out the competition's signature moves.
Clue 3: One Crew made like they were playing DONKEY KONG and jumped over some barrels.
Bonus Clue: At least one Crew did not follow our Top Ten Tips.

And MAJOR Spoiler: Lil' Mama said something crazy.

It's also worth noting that neither finalist had to produce an insane theme song.  Instead, they were graced by the services of legendary producer Swizz Beatz.  Y'all should be pleasantly pleased with the results. In any case, we'll have more details and reactions during our recap after the show airs on Thursday.  Just be ready to dial in those votes, America!

ABDC March Madness Round 2 Begins today -- Lil Mama Round 2, Day 1

Photo from the ABDC blocking: Poreotix doing Tetriotix

Fans in the Stands -- Reports from the Hip Hop Nation Challenge

We've got a few spoiler-free reports from the tapings of America's Best Dance Crew's Hip Hop Nation/Last Chance Challenge show.

Kyle: the crew's elimination was the most heartbreaking of the season, and every single member was sobbing, including the leader who could barely give final words. the final 2's performances were completely different. one taking a more simple approach, the other pulling out all the stops. Click here to read the rest of his report about the three crews

Crush!: This was an exciting night, as always! Even before the show began, everyone was in a great mood and dancing to the music that DJ Mia was playing. We Are Heroes, members from Beat Freaks and Quest attended the taping. I was very surprised by the crew that was saved this week...For the crew that went home, i felt like they inspired so many people, and that's the best thing a crew can do. They had an outstanding running and will be definitely remembered. Cant wait to see them next week in the finale! And, they announced at the taping, that the Champions episode is really going to happen -- they are going to have the winners of every season perform on stage! Click here to read the details of her spoiler-free report.

    Thanks for the reports! !

Sorry about the comments software problem -- please hang in there!

I am trying to get in contact with the Echo people to fix the comments problem. Please hang in there tonight if you can! Howard and Lekeith Present Their Top Ten Tips for the Final Three Crews

Howard and LeKeith, proprietors of the wickedly funny We'll Fix it In, agreed to do some guest writing for us. Here for your enjoyment: their Top Ten Tips for the Final Three Crews:

    1. DON'T BANK ON MAKING IT TO THE FINALS.

Howard: This tip isn't necessarily very helpful at this point in time. But I just wanted us to all remember the heartbreak of watching Kaba Modern face off against the JabbaWockeeZ.
LeKeith: So sad... That should have been the finale, MTV!
    Howard: Don't you know it.
LeKeith: But it has happened too many times. You can't look ahead to the last performance and sleep on the Hip Hop Decathlon.
Howard: Agreed. Let’s close with a moment of silence for Fanny Pak and Massive Monkees as well.
    LeKeith: Respect.

Unconfirmed Twitter report: JabbaWockeeZ might appear on ABDC again!

There are unconfirmed reports of a possible JabbaWockeeZ performance on America's Best Dance Crew, straight from recent Tweets:

Songlist for the Hip Hop Nation Challenge

America's Best Dance Crew this week has two challenges: Hip Hop Nation Challenge and the Last Chance Challenge. MTV Remote Control announced the challenges and songs for this week's Hip Hop Nation Challenge on ABDC. All three of the crews will dance to the same set of songs (though in differing order) and will have to perform three regional hip hop dance moves. Here's the song and the challenge (with links to Youtube videos showing the moves; leave a comment if you know of better videos representing these moves)
They will have their own song choice for the Last Chance Challenge. If it follows the same format as in earlier seasons, there will be an elimination in the middle of the show and only 2 crews will perform their Last Chance Challenge Routines. (Personal request to MTV: please tape the Last Chance Challenge for the crew that doesn't perform it and post it on your website. Every season, the fans are curious to see what they missed!

Video: Some unconventional krumping from Fresh Fam (part of Kabayan Krump Movement)

Occasionally, we show videos of non-ABDC-affiliated dance if we really like it. Here's an example: Fresh Fam Krumpers from the Philippines dance to Butterfly. Video from CurryDough's Youtube Channel.

Some background: Fresh Fam is part of  the Kabayan Krump Movement, a group of krumpers from the Philippines and Australia (and some from California) aiming to unite all krumpers from across the globe to end the hate/beef and unite as one. Some of the guys in KKM are affiliated with Krumpinoy, a crew founded by Patrick Caballo of the Philippine All Stars. They have been holding krump battles to unite krumpers from the country and other neighboring Asian countries and hope to unite krumpers from across the globe.  This performance was an exhibition and is supposed to be funny (like Poreotix and 'Love Story'). Thanks for the tip, Maxxann!

Exclusive video: MTV's 'Outtakes' on-stage and backstage at the Illusion Challenge

Members of  MTV camera crew felt sorry for us not getting any crew interviews this week due to technical problems at the ABDC Illusion Challenge taping. So, they gave us an outtake video that shows what you don't see on TV when you watch America's Best Dance Crew: Poreotix and Jungle Boogie having some fun on-stage; backstage interactions between all the crews, the MTV 'wranglers', alum crews and the press (including Fanny Pak's Glenda Morales); fond goodbyes to Jungle Boogie from Layla Kayleigh and many others; Jungle Boogie talking about how they feel just after getting the bad news; visits from ABDC alums like Vogue Evolution, and much more. Thanks MTV!!

Mailbox: Saltare on Ellen Show, Jungle Boogie twins on SYTYCD

      • Saltare will appear on the Ellen Show, to be taped on March 28 and aired on April 1. Thanks for the tip, CoachT27!
      • Jungle Boogie twins Anthony and Antwain Hart also competed on So You Think You Can Dance in 2009, but did not make it to the top 20. Thanks for the link, Any1!

Ninjaboi's Review of ABDC5's Illusion Challenge show

Hey guys! It’s the penultimate competitive episode for ABDC this season, so it’s getting down to the wire.  I wasn’t totally thrilled to be honest with the repeat of the Magic Challenge, or the overall episode itself, but it was better than a lot expected, I think.  WARNING.  THIS REVIEW CONTAINS POSSIBLE SPOILERS INTO HOW THE MAGIC TRICKS WERE EXCECUTED.  READ AT OWN RISK

      Overall results:
      Blueprint – 39
      Poreotix – 38/36.1
      Hype/Jungle Boogie - 35
