Exclusive Video: Static Noyze Super-juiced at being in the ABDC Top 9!

Chris Trondsen and Fanny Pak's Glenda Morales interviewed Static Noyze after the crew won the battle in the America's Best Dance Crew East Coast audition taping. They talk about how Fanny Pak loves the crew, their goal to stay original, how they felt during the battle and waiting for the results, who they're looking forward to meeting, and what happens between the regionals and the nationals.

Video: Swagger Crew members as dancing Lotto balls in viral video!

It's not easy making a living as a dancer, but some assignments are more fun (and odder) than others. Case in point: Swagger Crew members were part of a flash mob at Atlanta's Hartfield-Jackson airport to welcome Powerball to Georgia. Swagger Crew members  not on ABDC5 have the 'lead dance roles: John James is the Red Ball and Herbert Bowens (part of the crew but not on ABDC5) is the Yellow Ball. Other dancers include: ABDC Swagger Crew Members Jason Croom, Allen Skeene and Terrence Green; non-ABDC Swagger Crew member Brandon Womack; and Liz Legrande from Artistry in Motion.

More recaps from the ABDC5 East Coast auditions

  • Spoil the Ending calls Static Noyze "Fanny Pak incarnate" and thinks Legendary 7 out-tricked the battle
  • LA Times calls the East Coast crews 'average'
  • We'll Fix it In is back, irreverent as in Season 4. They want to rename Saltare as "Kamozee's Hotsteppers", find Lil Mama surprisingly cogent, and are half-expecting a one-legged dancer in the West Coast audition show. Wecome back guys!

Ghost Week 2 video: inspired by Static Noyze

As they announced last week, Ghost from Houston, TX wants to show ABDC fans what they're missing because the crew was cut during ABDC Week 1. Each week, they will take the challenge or a song and show how they might have handled it on the show. This week, they were inspired by Static Noyze's performance and taped a routine just a few hours after the East Coast auditions aired. I am really looking forward to seeing what they do once the Nationals start and the challenges are announced. You can follow them on HoustonGhostCrew Youtube Channel. Thanks, Kevin and others!

Exclusive video: East Coast audition show debrief by Fanny Pak and We are Heroes alums

After the taping of America's Best Dance Crew 5's East Coast audition taping, interviewers Chris Trondsen and Glenda Morales (Fanny Pak) stick around with Hiro (We Are Heroes) to share impressions of the show. As the studio lights fade and the place gets colder and emptier, you can also see the departure of ABDC's executive producers, and members of Fanny Pak and Beat Freaks.

Recaps Part I - The East Coast Edition

  • Its My ABDC is back with his ratings. He thought Legendary 7 was an improvement over Status Quo (but felt they were sloppy) and loved Blueprint
  • Admit it - You Love to Watch is back! The East Coast crews have her excited about ABDC again, but she notes that several crews in the South and East misused aerial tricks: "Its not enough for you to just do the tricks. They have to work as part of your piece or you might be better off not including them at all and sticking with more actual dancing. Got it?"
  • AC Slater isn't prefers Lil Mama over Omarion, thinks DraZtik won the battle, and isn't feeling the Saltare love.

Exclusive video: Saltare gives Glenda some jump rope lessons

Our videos this week are not up to normal quality due to some major equipment problems, but we'll still share what we think is 1. watchable and 2. interesting. This interview with Saltare before the East Coast auditions was taped has poor sound quality; PLEASE turn your sound off or way down before attempting to watch, and go straight to 3:20 for Glenda Morales' (Fanny Pak) getting in the rope action. She had loved jumping rope as a kid and was most looking forward to meeting this crew at the East Coast auditions. So, enjoy and again, sorry for the sound problems.

Exclusive video: Interviews with Blueprint and Static Noyze before the East Coast taping

Due to equipment problems, there is poor sound quality for our interviews conducted before the ABDC East Coast audition taping. The interviews for Blueprint and Static Noyze are still worth watching though for the content and for some dance demonstration. Click here to hear Static Noyze talk about their crew name, their styles (with some show and tell) and what it feels like to perform on ABDC. In this Blueprint interview, the dancers talked about how they got together, their supertight style, their costumes, and how it feels to be the first non-US crew. Again, sorry about the sound quality.

Preview from the Pressbox: Chris Trondsen backstage at the East Coast Auditions

Chris Trondsen and Glenda Morales were backstage at the ABDC5 East Coast audition tapings, interviewing the crews and taking in the action. Unfortunately this week we won't be able to post our taped interviews immediately; equipment problems caused low/no sound conditions which we may (or may not) be able to correct for all the interviews. But the next best thing is Chris' non-spoiler preview report:

"The East was in the building! This week is a must see for ABDC fans!  Before we even walked on set, a few MTV crew members came up to us and told us that this week was going to be good.  That the dancers were real serious and ready to go and that the level of dancing is going to be incredible.  They also said that the East crew members were more serious about the dancing and better behaved, so we already knew we were in for a good week.  Also, while waiting to go into the studio and back stage to the press area, we met a few of the crews as they were walking to get food about an hour before interviewing with us, and they had so much energy.  You could just tell that they were here to not only represent the East Coast but also ready to bring it.

One thing that people always debate is whether the crews really get along.  I can tell you that the East does.  They were all walking to get food together and chillen together instead of eating separately."

MTV and Randy Jackson being sued for stealing idea for ABDC!

This just in from TMZ.com: Dwight McGhee is suing Randy Jackson and MTV for $2,000,000. In 2004, McGhee claims he pitched a show idea called "International Breakerz League" to MTV, and that he and MTV struck an "implied" contract when he pitched the idea. McGhee filed  a lawsuir filed in LA County Superior Court in late January 2010, claiming breach of contract.

There is no comment yet from MTV or Randy Jackson.

Interview with Static Noyze: What's East Coast Style?

ProjectDDanceCompany just posted an earlier interview conducted with Static Noyze member Suzette Sagisi. She describes how Static Noyze was formed, their style, and how she thinks East Coast dance groups are distinctive. Thanks for the tip, Tanooki!

Reports from ABDC5 East Coast audition tapings

Several readers attended the taping of the East Coast audition show for ABDC5. Here are some spoiler-free reports:

Czar2010: "The EAST is in the house everybody!! These crews came really hard and really wanted to make the show. I was expecting to like one crew only but they were all good. The first crew that got saved was just over hyped from the crowd after their performance(in my opinion I didn't think they should have gotten saved). The second crew that got saved was the one I was looking forward in seeing. The bottom three crews battled their hearts out. You could feel the battle vibe in the stage. This battle was way better than the South's. The crew that got saved really deserved it!! I agreed on the judges decision. Overall this episode is better than last week's!! It's definitely worth watching over and over!!. . .ABDC alumni that attended: Hero, Maryss from Beat Freaks, Fanny Pak, Artistry in Motion, Strikers All-Star, and two guys from Ringmasters"

Crush_Girl: "The East came harder than the South for sure. An underdog crew brought it better than everyone else and was the first to be saved!! Even with them making it first, it was a tough decision of what other crews to save because they were all really good crews."

JC Chasez on Omarion, Shane Sparks, and ABDC5

JC-Chasez.net transcribed a radio interview with JC Chasez conducted on HOT101.9. He talks about Omarion, Shane Sparks, the new season of America's Best Dance Crew, and his other activities. Highlights:
  • On Omarion: "the fact is that he’s been on stage and you know, he understands what the dancers are going through but he’s done it at a successful level so he knows what it takes to connect with an audience as well so I think he’s gonna bring a great perspective to the show...people know Omarion’s body of work so they’ll know where he’s coming from when he makes his judgment calls, you know."
  • On Shane Sparks: "I just think it’s..an unfortunate situation. I kinda kept my nose out of it because you know, I don’t, that’s something I don’t wanna pass judgment on."
  • On whether ABDC Season 5 will be as good as prior seasons: "The fact is that there’s a million different dance styles, there’s a million different ideas floating around out there and you can’t capture it in just a handful of episodes so and that’s why the thing lives and breathes because people see, now people are watching the show and getting inspired and saying “okay, I see that, now I have to beat that”...And so I think the show actually gets better as it moves forward."

Mailbox: Hype 5-0, Beat Ya Feet Kings, 'B-girl Movie' red carpet, BreakEFX

New Contest: Name top 4 crews for ABDC5!

We will run two contests during America's Best Dance Crew Season 5 which will extend from now through the finale. The prize for both will be a Tshirt of your size and choice, value up to $35.

The Top 4 contest: Submit the names of the top 4 crews -- in the order that they'll finish. For example, last season the winning entry would have read " FINAL 4: 1. We Are Heroes 2. Afroborike 3. Massive Monkees 4. Rhythm City" Note: if you change your mind, you can enter again the next week, but we will only accept the FIRST entry from each email address each week. The prize goes to the first person to get it right, based on the week they submit the answer. If more than one person submits the right answer in that same week, we'll employ a tiebreaker rule to be determined.

To enter: Each week, we'll publish a new post for this contest. When the weekly post is up, add a comment with the names of the final 4, specifying the final order. Subsequent weeks' entries will be accepted from Fridays (once I put up the new contest post) until 6pm ET the following Tuesday (before the next show is taped). IMPORTANT:

  • Create a user name you will use every week for the entire contest, and make it memorable (not just a common first name or word). I can't track email addresses, and if it's difficult for me to track votes, they won't be counted.
  • MAKE SURE YOU INCLUDE THE WORDS 'TOP 4' in the comment (so I can search for them easily)
Good luck! During Season 4, we didn't get a correct entry until 1 week before the season ended, so if keep entering if you change your mind!

Let us know if you attend tonight's taping!

The second episode of America's Best Dance Crew Season 5 tapes tonight, with 5 crews from the East Coast auditions battling for 3 spots. If you attend the taping, leave a comment and let us know what it was like -- the crowd, the battles, the judges, costumes, celebrities, you name it.  REMEMBER -- NO SPOILERS. DO NOT SAY (OR EVEN IMPLY) THE FATE OF ANY OF THE CREWS!

Profile & videos of East Coast Crews: Blueprint, Draztik, Legendary 7. Saltare, Static Noyze

On the second episode of America's Best Dance Crew Season 5, five crews who auditioned in Boston and New York will compete for 3 spots in the 'Top 9'. Here's info about the crews, culled from MTV's descriptions and internet research:

Blueprint Cru from Montreal, Canada are the first-ever foreign crew to compete on ABDC. "This perfectionist crew doesn’t believe in tricks and stunts, they believe in unified movements down to every minute detail." They won Monsters of Hip Hop 2008 (albeit with different members than the crew that auditioned for ABDC)-click here for a video of the winning choreography. They are all members of 8Count; you can watch other videos of Blueprint and 8 Count at the 8CountDance Youtube Channel. You can contact them on Twitter or at their website. Here's their ABDC5 audition routine:

Draztik hails from Rhode Island. They are mostly self-taught from music videos. Their choreography is contemporary and ballet, fused with popping and hip hop. Draztik member Kelvin Fabian's dance credits include freestyling on Showtime at the Apollo; more available at Kelvint2123 Youtube Channel.  They can be reached at Facebook and MySpace.

Legendary 7 from Boston (pictured above) is the most recent incarnation of Status Quo, a crew that came in second in ABDC1.  Crew leader Ernest "E-Knock" Phillips and Darius Rutledge were both appeared in SQ on ABDC. L7's style is big tricks, breaking, krumping and popping.   Many of the Legendary 7 members auditioned in New York for ABDC3 and ABDC4 (click here for the Season 4 audition and callback). More recently, SQ Entertainment did well on 2009's America's Got Talent. They can be reached on MySpace

Saltare members (pictured above) are East Coast college students who are also  part of the USA Jump Rope All Star team.   No video of the Crew, but here's a video of the 2006 Jump Rope All-Stars.  You can contact them at Facebook and on their website.

Static Noyze from Boston performs "contemporary and theatrical hip hop choreography".  They use their routines to convey offbeat stories, through cutting edge moves and costumes. Visit their Youtube Channel to see their workshops and recent performances. They won Elements X in November 2009. Reach them on Facebook and Twitter. Here's a rehearsal of their ABDC5 audition routine:

More Recaps of the Southern Auditions

  • ACSlater.com  prefers Lil Mama over Omarion and Ghost over Jungle Boogie.
  • It's My ABDC takes Ninjaboi's idea of a rating scale (without proper credit to this website and ninjaboi's post!), modifies it and proclaims Swagger Crew the winner, with Jungle Boogie and Royal Flush tied and close behind.

Video: We are Heroes - what it's like to return to the ABDC tapings

We Are Heroes attended the taping of America's Best Dance Crew 5's Southern auditions show. The last time they had been on the stage there, they were pronounced winners of ABDC4. They talk to our reporters Chris Trondsen and Fanny Pak's Glenda Morales about what it felt like to return to the studio and their opinions about the crews in the Southern auditions. Thanks to dancetag.tv, our backstage partner for ABDC5!

Ellen Kim (L0st Kids, Neverland): "I'm sure we're not going to audition for ABDC again"

Chris Trondsen covered the LA Choreographers Carnival on January 27, 2010 for Pacific Rim. He conducted a LOT of interviews with ABDC-related crews including Heavy Impact, Beat Freaks, Artistry in Motion and We are Heroes. Here, he talks with Ellen Kim from L0st Kids and Neverland about her crews and her views on ABDC. She states that she's very happy that some great crews were chosen from the West Coast, but she is "sure that we are not going to audition again."

Ninjaboi's review & ratings of ABDC5's Southern audition show

Reader Ninjaboi reviewed America's Best Dance Crew 5, Week 1 - The Southern auditions. He created a 30-point scale to analyze each of the crews:
  • "Intricacy/Choreo/Togetherness (Kaba would get a 10 here) - isolations, tutting, etc
  • Wow/Tricks (Massive Monkees would be the best here) - mostly athletic moves
  • Showmanship (Quest and Jabbawockeez would be the best here) - how well they use stage, showcase members, the energy, and such"
Based on this scale, his ranking for the routines (before the battle):  Swagger 24, Jungle Boogies 22, Royal Flush 22, Ghost 20,  X-treme Motion 17. Ninjaboi's review also discusses crew personalities (based on interviews), power rankings, recommendations to improve performances, and comments about the judges.

BE SURE TO CLICK HERE to read the detailed review. I personally would love to see Ninjaboi's scale (or suggested variants) used in reader comments to improve our discussions about the crews and the season.

JabbaWockeeZ to appear on weekly TV Show in Philippines

The Jabbawockeez signed a contract to perform every Sunday performing on ASAP XV, a Philippines-based TV musical-variety show. Over the last 15 years the show has shown many of the best Filipino dance groups and innovated dance crazes. In an article from ABS-CBN (the producers of ASAP), JabbaWockeeZ member Joe Larot says that the ABDC winners plan to stay in the Philippines for some time.“We’re planning to stay here for as long as you want us to be here. Why not the Philippines? There’s a lot to love here,” said Joe.

Here's JabbaWockeeZ performance on ASAP on January 31. The first time JabbaWockeez went to dance on that episode, there was a music malfunction; this is the second, 'perfect' performance. Thanks for the tips, Jacob!
