JSkunk's Review of ABDC's Madonna Challenge
Hello all, this is JSkunk. I figured it wouldn’t hurt to share my views and opinions this week, since I have been meaning to do so in the past but instead succumbed to laziness. But before we get onto the crews and how I feel they performed, let’s start with something truly ‘interesting’, such as my backstory.
I have been watching ABDC since season 1, I am a dancer (street jazz, hip-hop, breaking, and contemporary) who is self-taught, I am a college student, I like soccer, and I also write in my free time. Despite my preferences and opinions on dance, dancers, and styles of dance, I have nothing but the utmost respect for these people who are following their aspirations and seeking to only entertain us. Even if I don’t like it, I feel that everyone on that stage deserves to be there and has worked hard for it.

Now with the pleasantries out of the way, let’s move onto this week’s episode.

Hey guys, Ninjaboi here.
As you can tell from the picture above, I had the honor of meeting ABDC5 Champions Poreotics this last Friday at Drexel's Best Dance Crew. I was able to conduct an interview on a number of topics, ranging from whether they thought they would get as far as they did when they were younger, why they decide to go back to college campus events (even if there are much bigger events), advice they have for kids who want to start their own crews, or to join their college dance teams, about the coming Uploaded: The Asian American Movement Documentary, and their creative process. They also tell us how to keep up to date with the latest on Poreotics news.
Unfortunately my camera died right before the interview so I had to substitute with my laptop instead, hence the quality or lack thereof. There is a transcript on Youtube (though it doesn't always match up with the video...). Still, much thanks to NancyT and Jenny Valles for helping me set up this interview, and of course many thanks to these guys for honoring me with this interview.

Great news: Steelo will be dancing with Groovaloos on Dancing with the Stars May 1! AND watch this documentary trailer
It was just about a year ago that Steelo suffered the brain aneurysm that could have sidelined his career. But aided with prodigious amounts of physical therapy, love, and support (including donations from fans), he is recovered enough to appear with Groovaloos on the May 1 Dancing with the Stars results show, airing on ABC at 9pm ET/PT.
More Steelo news: there is now a website for the documentary about his life and recovery: 444movie.com. Here's the trailer for the documentary. Thanks for the tips, Greg!

Video: Layla Kayleigh at Madonna Challenge on double elimination, crew moods & attitudes, love for 8 Flavahz
Chris Trondsen is on the couch with Layla Kayleigh backstage at the taping of America's Best Dance Crew's Madonna Challenge. In Part 1, she talks about how everyone was shocked (including her) at the announcement of the double elimination, how the judges will pick who is eliminated, the mood of the crews at the taping (especially after the double elimination announcement), the optimal crew attitude for doing well, fan bases and forecasts, Layla's hygiene practices, and some personal questions from Layla to Chris. In Part 2 . Layla talks about love for 8 Flavahz performance and swagger (though she does love all the crews of course!), how Season 7 returns to the ABDC formula of extremely strong crews, and Chris & Layla's plans to dance together with lessons from Beat Freaks.

Mr. Wiggles at Rutgers University
Hey guys, this is a bit of a last minute announcement, but Mr.Wiggles, one of the pioneers of the hip hop culture, will be teaching at Rutgers University tonight. A member of hip hop giants Rock Steady Crew, the Electric Boogaloos, and the Zulu Nation, he will be teaching two workshops, with a cypher, for the low low price of $10. It truly is a great chance to learn from one of the pioneers of hip hop (as Funkdation crew mentioned in their crew bio), and so if you're in the area, please try and come out and support hip hop. Byenyn's Review of ABDC's Madonna Challenge
Last week, five crews danced to Flo Rida’s club hits. I think most of us will agree that the Flo Rida group performance was one of the worst group performances in ABDC history. Not necessarily because of the dancing, but mostly because the cameras felt needlessly compelled to follow Flo Rida, the least mobile person on stage. Imagine if the Ke$ha group performance last season focused mainly on the poles.
After a tough dance battle, the judges saved Funkdation over Mix’d Elements. This week, the nine crews are going to tackle the music of pop icon Madonna, one of the most successful recording artists of all time and also the woman who once kissed Britney Spears at the VMAs. Mario Lopez gives the shocking (but also heavily leaked) announcement that two crews will be eliminated tonight from the three crews with the fewest votes. So soon?!

Recaps for ABDC's Madonna Challenge
- Daily Princetonian pithily summarizes the performances, describes the highs and lows, and notes that we've returned to US's Best Dance Crew.
- AV Club gives the episode a B+ and got goosebumps from Funkdation's isolations
- AllVoices summarizes the show and has lots of links to old Madonna videos and some random images that don't seem to have much to do with the show. So confused!
- Ology gives highest grades to Elektrolytes and 8 Flavahz
- Screen Invasion thinks Collizion Crew was the right choice to stay and that they should get the best song during the Drake Challenge.
- We'll Fix it In just posted their Flo Rida Challenge review, but hey, better late than never for Howard and LeKeith's patter. Bam.

Time for Week 2 of the ABDC Season 7 Elimination Challenge: Which crews will be in the bottom 2 each week? Who will be eliminated? Enter each week and the person with the highest cumulative score for Season 7 will win an ABDC crew shirt of their choice and size (up to $35 retail).
To enter: Each week, we'll publish a new post for this contest. When the weekly post is up, leave a comment with the name of the bottom 2, specifying which one is eliminated. You will be awarded 1 point for each crew you name in the bottom 2 that week, and an extra point for identifying the eliminated crew, for a total of 3 possible points per week. The person with the highest cumulative score wins, and we'll figure out something if we need a tie-breaker.
This week's entries will be accepted from now until noon (East Coast time) on Saturday April 28, so that nobody can use insider info from the tapings. **IMPORTANT**:

What questions would YOU like us to ask the ABDC crews at the tapings?
Chris Trondsen and various ABDC alums will be interviewing crews
backstage
at tapings of America's Best Dance Crew this season. Now that you've seen all the crews perform, what else would you like to
learn about them? Chris wants some new and fresh questions that will
interest/amuse/intrigue the crews and the audience alike!
Leave a comment on some questions you'd like to have answered or some challenges you'd like to issue the crews and the judges, either in general or for specific crews/people. If we use your question, we'll give you credit of course! And, this will be part of a master list; even if we don't use your question this week, it might get asked at the next taping. Thanks!

The double elimination onstage at ABDC resulted in the elimination of 24% of the valid entries to date. So, many of you may want to reconsider your entries and try again this week. After all, who knows what twists might be thrown in next week?

Send some love to Irratik
I was so psyched when I heard that Irratik was picked for America's Best Dance Crew Season 7. The girls had all the creativity and technique of ABDC5's Blueprint Cru (another crew in the 8 Count family), with an added sexy fierceness that made them compelling to watch. Their performances at Hip Hop International and ABDC make it clear that they have potential to be major players in the dance world, individually and as a group.
This post is only for positive comments about Irratik. If you have something else to say, please comment in the Party Room/Critics Corner.

Send some love to Funkdation!
Last night's elimination also eliminated a rare chance for TV audiences to see a crew adept in the foundations of street hip hop dance. Funkdation brought strong technique and choreo surprises to the ABDC stage. I hope they appear again at Hip Hop International and other dance events so that we can continue enjoying their clean old-school style and talent.

Video: RNG dancing in the halls of their hotel, between rehearsals!
Rated Next Generation (RNG) finds time between rehearsals, lessons, and other commitments to show their fans why they deserve votes on America's Best Dance Crew. Exclusive Interview with Jet Li (Poreotics): impressions of the ABDC tapings and crews
Chris Trondsen talks with Poreotics' Jet Li at the taping of America's Best Dance Crew's Flo Rida Challenge, after Jet Li co-hosted backstage interviews for BABDC. Jet Li talks about the vibe at the tapings, how Hip Hop International and other TV dance shows give crews an advantage, which crew he gets along with the best, Step Up Revolution and its use of ABDC alumni, and what's next for Poreotics.
Video: Mixd Elements | Over 9000
Even if Mix'd Elements were eliminated one week ago, they haven't let that hold them back. They were a crew before ABDC and they're sticking around after that. To accentuate that point, they're going Super Saiyan in this concept video of theirs. Apparently they had made this before they went on ABDC, but sat on it so that they could use some of the moves from this video on the show. Now that they're off the show, they're going to share it with the world, with the promise of more to come.
Big props and mad respect for this crew - we all look forward to see them grow and continue to get sicker with time.

Randy Jackson on The Talk
Randy Jackson's rocking the daytime TV talk shows. While most of this interview on "The Talk" is about American Idol, at the 28:43 mark, they do start talking about ABDC, featuring clips of the Flo Rida group performance, Mos Wanted Crew's performance, and a performance by the daytime hosts crew the JabbaTALKeez, with some surprising power moves from these ladies. Or at least supposedly by these ladies.

Even with the excitement of ABDC7 going on, crews from past seasons have been keeping busy as well, dancing and performing, competing and teaching. Here's just a quick listing of videos from the past week we want to highlight
-I.aM.mE crew (ABDC6 champions) has footage from their "Shake Up the World" Tour in the Philippines.
-Hype 5-0 (ABDC5), with members of Hypersquad Studios performed at Crewz Control in Ft. Collins, Colorado. Apparently I.aM.mE, Kaba Modern, and BreakEFX all performed as well. Here's a cypher that took place after the event on stage.
-World of Dance Tour dropped a video featuring Les Twins, Smart Mark (ABDC2 Phresh Select), and Chachi, filmed right after WOD LA.
-World of Dance Tour also dropped a video featuring Mos Wanted Crew (ABDC7)'s Ricky Cole, and his protege Harlie Ramirez from Soul Fresh Fam
-Chad Mayate (ABDC5 Champs Poreotics) taught at Quest Learning Center recently: Here's his choreography
-Mix'd Elements (ABDC7) may be gone from the competition, but they're not out of the dance scene. They have this video letting you guys know how to get connected with them, and promising us some video footage showcasing what they were hoping to show America on the show.
-Step Boys (ABDC7) takes you behind the scenes to see what the accommodations are like for crews in the ABDC hotel, featuring Funkdation and Fanny Pak. Of course they do it MTV Cribs style.

They discovered the dancers during their first full length show back in 2010 and followed them through America's Best Dance Crew, the performance of their show "When The Curtain Falls", the creation of their second full length show "Catalyst", America's Got Talent auditions (both last year and this year), and the creation of their sister company JAGGED South.

Ninjaboi's Review - ABDC's Flo Rida Challenge
Greetings all! So ABDC Season 7 is really in full gear now with all 10 crews having gone, and already a (very sad) elimination taking place. I really think the talent this season is top class level, without a single crew being truly out of place. However, we've gotta have some way of breaking down who did better or worse, so there comes in the numbers. Please note that my rankings are my personal thoughts on the matter and not official BABDC rankings or anything like that. Just my reasoning on why I think these crews are ranked where they are.
Please read my review by clicking below, then come back and comment on what you think. Feel free to agree, disagree, whatever, so long as we all keep it civil and level headed.
Click here to see my rankings for the crews this week, a breakdown of that most excellent battle, and power rankings for all 9 remaining crews!

Byenyn's Review of ABDC's Flo Rida Challenge
It’s ABDC, Season Seven, Episode 2! Last week, five of the ten crews performed to Britney Spears and Mix’d Elements was placed in the Bottom Two by the judges, where they will fight for their lives (THEIR LIVES!) against one of the five crews performing tonight. This week’s superstar is Flo Rida, who never ever met a club that could handle him. Everywhere he goes is a club! Flo Rida’s house is a club! His bathroom is a club!
Anyways, Flo Rida shows up to perform his song, “Wild Ones.” With the exception of RNG, who performed their bit before Flo hits the stage, it’s hard to get a good sense of the different crew’s styles (hey, producers, did you forget this show is a DANCE competition?) because the camera frequently pans to Flo Rida (and his bling’d out microphone) and the audience making random animal gestures. At some point, everyone’s wearing sunglasses indoors so you know this club is super cool. It’s a nice gesture that Mr. Flo Rida is willing to perform on the ABDC stage once again, but I wish it didn’t have to be all about him, once again. To add to that effect, he’s also showing up as a special judge.

Announcing new contest - ABDC Season 7 Elimination Challenge - enter now!
We will run two contests during America's Best Dance Crew Season 7 which will extend from now through the finale. Contest #2: The Elimination Challenge: Which crews will be in the bottom 2 each week? Who will be eliminated? Enter each week and the person with the highest cumulative score for Season 7 will win an ABDC crew shirt of their choice and size (up to $35 retail).
To enter: Each week, we'll publish a new post for this contest. When the weekly post is up, leave a comment with the name of the bottom 2, specifying which one is eliminated. For example, in Season 6, a winning entry for the Rihanna Week Challenge would have read: "BOTTOM 2 WEEK 5 - Phunk Phenomenon, 787 Crew. Eliminated: 787 Crew." You will be awarded 1 point for each crew you name in the bottom 2 that week, and an extra point for identifying the eliminated crew, for a total of 3 possible points per week.
This week's entries will be accepted from now until noon (East Coast time) on Saturday April 21, so that nobody can use insider info from the tapings. **IMPORTANT**:

Dance's Review of ABDC's Flo Rida Challenge
BABDC reader Dance reviews America's Best Dance Crew's Flo Rida week:
ABDC is back everyone! This week's episode was way better than last week's episode. I feel like the season has really begun. All of the performances were great from beginning to end. Every crew came with something special and the ending battle was crazy dope! Both Funkdation and Mix'd Elements did their thing and it was a great battle to watch. I wish Mix'd Elements could have stayed after that battle. I do wish Mix'd Elements luck in all of their future endeavors and we'll see great things from them in the future. This is going to be a great season and I can't wait until next week's episode!
Click here to read the rest of her review. Thanks, Dance!Send some love to Mix'd Elements
In any other season Mix'd Elements probably would have made it much further into the competition. Their range of styles is unmatched by any crew that has appears on America's Best Dance Crew. Their skillful moves and humor were evident, and they wielded a prop (their suspenders) for visual interest and variety as well as the best of the 'novelty' crews of the past. I am very sorry I won't get to see more of their moves and watch them develop over the ABDC season.
This post is only for kind words about Mix'd Elements. If you've got complaints about them or other aspects of ABDC, please take it to the Critics Corner. Any negative comments on this post (about Mix'd Elements or any other crew) will be deleted.

It feels like a lot has happened in the dance world since IaMmE took the title last season. Hip Hop International (HHI) had their gold medals nearly swept by New Zealand, helmed by ReQuest Crew, whom a few people remember as “Hey, didn’t they get 7th?” Dance Hero Japan went through two seasons of their own dance competition, which also had some amazing performances. And a dance to a dubstep version of “Pumped Up Kicks” was one of the most popular things on YouTube. What a year.
So what’s going to happen this season? The ten crews will perform in halves, and the unsaved crew from each half will be in the Bottom Two, at risk for elimination. This episode, in honor of the “Return of the Superstars” theme, is all about Britney Spears, whose music is now filthier and more synthesized than ever.

Video: Help StepBoys pick their next ABDC moves - Mailman or Centaur?
Step Boys, who just performed this last Wednesday, seems to be doing an ABDC first, in allowing their fans to help them shape their routines next week. They're offering two moves they are thinking about incorporating into their routines, and letting viewers pick which ones they want to see. So which one do you want to see?
Ninjaboi's Week 1 Review
Greetings BBDC! Season 7 has been kicked off, and as ever, I’m here again to cover the show. Again, if you missed my pre-season analysis last week, I’m Ninjaboi, one of the contributors/moderators of the site. I may not be a professional dancer (even if I do dance), but I like numbers, so over the past three seasons or so, I’ve come up with a more quantitative judging system than what our lovely judges give us on screen. Please note that this review is my PERESONAL opinion of the episode, with some informal polling of dancer friends to supplement it. This is NOT the official BBDC opinion of each crew, merely a single drop of an opinion in the sea that is the Internet.
More recaps and ABDC7 mentions -- even Perez Hilton is watching!
- Perez Hilton calls Irratik's performance in the Britney Spears challenge "Ferosh", adding "These girls can effing MOVE, right?! A routine that would make Brit Brit proud, hands down!"
- Daily Princetonian analyzes and summarizes each performance using the performance clips to explain her judgement and opinions. She didn't get to watch the show live, so she uses BloggingABDC's play-by-play comments to set the order. Any time, Christine!
- Screen Invasion (which used to be called Too Interesting for Twitter) mostly summarizes the action, and didn't think that Mix'd Elements deserved to be put in danger of elimination
- Spoil the Ending doesn't want Fanny Pak to cry again, and thought Stepboys were more memorable than the other competitors
