Purple Elephant Society in Kollaboration ATL

Now we continue with what I remember as the start of the decline of Season five -- Usher Week.  Yet another iconic challenge for the crews this season. The Asia Pacific area -- including Japan, Hawaii, New Zealand, and Philippines -- are coping with damage or threats from a massive earthquake and resulting tsunamis. Our thoughts are with the people in those areas, including some of our favorite dancers and BBDC community members.

To prepare for the new season, reader Raven created an America's Best Dance Crew tribute video featuring performances by all five champions, on her Ravcampbell Youtube Channel. Thanks Raven!

Several readers have complained or commented about two recent developments concerning I.aM.mE:

• The take-down of Pacman's Youtube Channel for "multiple third-party notifications of copyright infringement"
• An enigmatic tweet from I.aM.mE: "Unfortunately things don't work out the way you plan but IaMmE will stay strong in 2011 and bring you the new youtube videos that yall love" 

My take on these messages: 

• Don't try and interpret this as a message about I.aM.mE and America's Best Dance Crew Season 6.   
• I will not remove/disable my posts with links to Pacman's Channel, since the videos will probably be re-enabled. Given the listed sources of the complaint, there is an excellent chance that upon review of the charges, Youtube will reverse their decision. If there are music copyright issues (possible since these are dance videos), the normal course of action taken by Youtube is not to block a channel but to either: put ads on the video with revenues going to the music publishers OR to strip out the soundtrack. But, it may take some time for this to be resolved.  So, be patient and hope Youtube recognizes the claim is false and appreciates viewers' desire to see the videos ASAP!

Each season, MTV introduces the next season of America's Best Dance Crew by showing off the previous season's winners. It's Poreotic's turn, dancing in a castle that looks like Grand Central Station under a full solar eclipse. I guess that explains why the guys always wore sunglasses. Or something. Note: the original video was taken down, but this video ad for Poreotic's South Africa tour contains most of the material in the ad.

We got funky with Lady Gaga last week.  This week, we are gonna get FUNK KAY with the music and dancing of my favorite era: The Disco Era! Will the crews be able to get down and be funky enough to tackle the magnificence of the mirror ball?  In addition, crews will be given a challenge move from the disco era to incorporate and ALL crews must include a lift into their routine. Video: Mos Wanted Crew's ABDC6 callback routine

Mos Wanted Crew announced on Facebook that they were not chosen for America's Best Dance Crew Season 6. Here's a taste of what we'll be missing: their callback routine (using Ke$ha's "We are Who We are") for the auditions, created in only four hours. 

Mos Wanted will be performing at World of Dance Los Angeles on April 2, and are trying to clear their schedules so they can perform at WOD New York later in the year.

 A promotional trailer for America's Best Dance Crew Season 6 aired on March 9, 2011. Mario Lopez' voiceover says that each week the crews' challenge will "feature the hottest music of a different superstar", showing Justin Bieber, Ke$ha, Rihanna, Lil Wayne, and Black Eyed Peas.  We've seen the fifteen crews assembled to audition for us. Now, only nine remain.  The Nationals start now and unlike most other seasons the crews are given a challenge right out the box, instead of a Crews Choice.  Tonight is the Chart Topper challenge.  Nothing really special about it really; crews just have to make a routine to a hit song is all.  However, since this is Nationals Week One, we will have the fourth sudden death of the season with one crew from each region in the bottom three. The line-up at Urban Street Jam in Los Angeles today (March 5, 2011) rivals any one-day competition you'll find anywhere in the U.S. Exhibition crews include Beat Freaks, Ringmasters, Blended Projekt, Miniotics, Tha Academy, and Unity LA. Kaba Modern performing at Disney's ElecTRONica this month!

Kaba Modern (America's Best Dance Crew Season 1) are the latest group signed to dance at Disney California Adventure Park's ElecTRONica, following popular runs by Poreotics and We Are Heroes. They are scheduled to dance Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays through March 20.

Teldon's ABDC Rewatch - Season 5, Episode 1 - "The South"

Well-- New season, new format for the show.  This season, the audition rounds are back.  Unlike Seasons One and Two, this is not a two hour torture session.  This time around, they have narrowed it down to three regions (yet again screwing the Midwest): The East Coast, The South and The West Coast.  Each region gets its own episode as well.  I really enjoyed this change as it gave us more time to get to know the crews that would make it to nationals and let more crews have a chance.  For each round of the auditions, five crews will perform and two crews will advance to nationals.  Then, the remaining three crews will have to battle it out in a sudden death round to determine who gets the third spot.  Click here to watch The South audition, then read the Rewatch Review. 1iota.com is the place to go if you want to be in the studio audience for America's Best Dance Crew. They now have tickets available for the taping of the first two shows. Both are on Sunday April 3 in the afternoon. I don't know if this means that taping will shift to Sundays this season. Click here for information and to get your tickets.

The site lists ABDC 'guests': Mario Lopez, J. C. Chasez, and Lil Mama. No mention of Omarion or another 'guest'.

Wanted: Information and videos about a 'mystery' LA auditioning crew

We've heard multiple rumors (from excellent sources) about another crew that auditioned for America's Best Dance Crew Season 6 and did really well. Our reporters at the auditions know nothing about them, so I wanted to see if any of you have further information. 

The name supposedly has the word "Truth" in it, and they have a variety of classical hip hop techniques (popping, b-boy, tricking) along with jazz and choreo. At least one member appears to be part of the Clear Talent Group. If you know something, please share it in the comments!

Mailbox: Keep It Live 2 Street Dance Jam, Royal Flush' Neyon in "Hall Pass", Quest interview

-- Keep It Live is back with a second street dance competition on March 12 in Los Angeles! It will feature a 2-on-2 popping battle, 2-on-2 all styles battle, and a showcase by local crew Distinguished Gentlemen. The winners of our 2-on-2 popping battle will go on to battle dancers from the JRock (Dark Doctor from LXD) and JSmooth (Step Up 3D) and others on March 19 at the Truth of Poppin' event in LA. 

-- Neyon of Royal Flush has a featured part in the hit movie "Hall Pass". Just look for the guy with the goggles in the bar scene!
-- Channel APA has a new interview with Quest Crew, where they answer the usual questions, plus talk about where they'll be in 10 years, words of wisdom, and regrets

The top 10 are the crews that appear on the first episode of ABDC6 to be aired April 7, 2010.  If there the show has a different number competing, we'll count the ones who appear and are on your list. ABDC6 auditions spotlight - taped tryouts: Chaos Theory Crew, Ol' Skool Cru, Sinigang, Smash!

Time for more attention and information on the crews that did well at the America's Best Dance Crew Season 6 auditions and might be chosen to appear on the show.  We know names for most of the crews that did well during their auditions.  We will soon run a contest to let you 'cast' which of the crews you think should make it to ABDC6 Top 10.  To help you choose and give these crews some exposure, we'll spotlight each of them and show any recent performance videos we can find.

• Chaos Theory Crew is a group from Princeton University that focuses on technical styles of hip hop dance.  You can follow them on Facebook, Twitter, and ChaosTheoryCrew Youtube (which includes videos of  Kaba Modern's visit to Princeton).  Click here to see the group performances from Fall 2010 and Winter 2011. • Ol' Skool Cru from Seattle consists of members who are all over 40 and "have over 200 years of dance experience" between them.

Winner of the ABDC Time Machine Contest: Video of Super Cr3w's Ronnie at age 11!

Thanks to everyone who entered out ABDC Time Machine contest, to find the earliest video footage of a member of an America's Best Dance Crew competitor. MintyMist is the winner, having sent in footage from Turn It Loose with embedded video of Super Crew's Ronnie dancing at the age of 11. Since he was born in 1982, the clip has to have been filmed around 1993-94.

In this clip (starting at 0:59) Ronnie's voice over says that he was 11 years old in the clip. You can also watch a little more of the same footage at another point in Turn It Loose (click here, watch starting at 4:35). Congratulations MintyMist!

• The Generation is a group of guys under the age of 18 who represent junior dance groups in the Southern California area.  We haven't found a video with a full routine from the group, but here's our interview (with a short dance demo) at the ABDC6 auditions. (When watching the dance, be kind and remember that the group had very little room on the sidewalk to move!)

• Unity LA is part of the Unity Dance Ensemble, and formed in 2005. They performed in many events in Southern California including VIBE, World of Dance San Diego, and Fusion. Well we just got done with India and what a left field style challenge that was!  So to make things normal, let's put a trampoline in the middle of the stage.  That's normal, right?  In addition, you have to add some fairly bleh dance moves to your routine.  Because we wouldn't want you to have a normal routine and showcase your best.  That would be cheating.  Can these five crews overcome this adversity and make it work? • RNG is a teen mostly-girl group from Seattle that did well on America's Got Talent.  The name stands for Rated Next Generation. in 2010, they also competed at World of Dance Seattle and Monsters of Hip Hop, and won first place in the US Junior Division Hip Hop International Competition in 2009. • SickStep is a  renowned Los Angeles b-boy crew founded in 2003. Members have appeared in dozens of music videos, TV shows including making the semi-finals on America's Got Talent), music tours, and movies, as well as area competitions like VIBE, Maxt out, and World of Dance. Today we cover what, in my opinion, was the biggest gamble of a theme the show has ever done: Bollywood Week.  For two completely different styles of dance to be fused together is a risk.  Does it turn out well or is this another "High Concept, Poor Execution" episode?  Time to find out. • Marvel Inc. is a Los Angeles group with an established fan base that loves  their jerkin' style. You can follow them on Twitter and TheMarvelInc Youtube.The videos don't show much group dancing, but here's a recent one showing some group moves and the individual members' skills, starting around 2:28.

• Mos Wanted Crew is already phenomenally popular, though almost nobody has ever seen them perform together. The members have been leaders in the Hip Hop dance community and have been part of 29 other dance groups including ABDC alumni SoReal Cru. Supreme Soul, Team Millennia, and Boxcuttuhz. What would a season of ABDC be without one of its trademark High Concept, Poor Challenge episodes?  Boring; that is for sure.  True, the dancing may not be that great, but the fails are what make it fun.  Tonight's entry into this Hallowed Hall is the Martial Arts Challenge. Crews must not only perform normally, but pick a signature move from a martial arts style to add to their routine.  They will be helped in this endeavour by Steve Terada from Quest Crew.  He will show them three distinct moves from each style and they will have to choose one to showcase into their routine.  Will the students become the masters?  Hit play and find out! Mos Wanted Crew members have performed for years, but there is no video of all the members in one place. So Koopa created a demo reel for the crew, showing some of best moves of each of the members on PulsePop Youtube. LXD Announcement: Big Screen 3D debut and Season 3

In this video, John Chu announces that The LXD will have their big screen and 3D movie debut called "Game On" on Friday February 25 for one week. It will be shown as a feature before the Justin Bieber movie "Never Say Never" Fan Collection. He also mentions that they will be filming a third season of The LXD. Thanks for the tip, Ninjaboi!

• 25/8 comes from Hawaii. Their name represents "one hour longer, one day stronger". While the members have been dancing together for years, they've only been a crew for about a year. Teldon's ABDC Rewatch - Season 4, Episode 1: Crew's Choice Challenge

So begins Season Four: the "diversity" season.  There were also some unique changes to this season.  Most notably was the time slot change to Sunday nights.  This allowed our Canadian friends to be able to watch the show at the same time as us and vote with us. Sadly, this is the season where DJ Rashida left the show and is the last season where Shane Sparks was a judge.  Also, as an added treat, they added in canned audience reactions so every routine now has cheering from beginning to end.  Many fans have called this the "weakest" season and the worst season out of the five. Sure, it starts slowly, but once it gets going it is really good.  Was the rage over certain crews being passed over to blame for this view, or was this actually that bad?  Time to suit up, tune in and find out. Video: Minor Effect vlogs their waiting experience at ABCD6 auditions (featuring Fallen Kings)

Crews waited for hours upon hours for their turn to audition for America's Best Dance Crew this year. Minor Effect documented what they saw, including scenes of themselves and other dancers,  dance demonstrations on the street and inside the practice room, and activity by the press and MTV. The video is long, which gives a good sense of how they were experiencing the day. Highlights for me: dancing by Fallen Kings and a turfing group; the narrator's description (and filming) of our BloggingBestDanceCrew.com press crew: the correct identification of our cameraman (Scott Yoshimoto of MOVeMEDIA) and calling Chris Trondsen as the "guy who's on Youtube all the time". Who will compete on America's Best Dance Crew Season 6?  Almost no idea! • Irratik is a Canadian crew that developed at the 8 Count Dance Center, home of ABDC5's Blueprint Cru and ABDC auditioners 8 Count (the ones that auditioned in Chicago, not the ones who auditioned in NY!). They won the Silver medal for Varsity at Hip Hop International 2009. Their Facebook account appears to be unused; leave a comment if you have a better way to follow them.
