BreakEFX Updates with video: BreakEFXTV, Verve Collizion, Vail International Dance Festival, member changes

Here's an update on BreakEFX, who went home too early (IMO) in ABDC's Season 5:
  • Cameron Hobbs (the dancer injured on the show)  went through major ACL reconstructive surgery.Post surgery, Cameron was told that he would have a nine month recovery time before he could even think to dance again. He has since surpassed the doctors initial estimate in recovering time and has become the his doctors "poster child for recovery".He and fellow crew member, Mikey Ruiz started BreakEFX TV at BreakEFX Youtube Channel.
  • One recent post on BreakEFX TV is a trailer for the Verve Collizions Hip Hop Competition in Boulder, CO. BreakEFX won this competition twice and sponsored it this year. Other  guest performances this year included Choreo Cookies and Team Millenia.:
  • BreakEFX have been named the official ambassadors of Hip Hop for the Vail International Dance Festival in Vail, Colorado in August 2010. It's literally the first time hip hop has been asked to participate in the prestigious festival. They will be closing the week of events with an hour and a half full length production including live DJ's and percussion band.
  • Member Eppie Deleon has left BreakEFX and "resigned all association" after being arrested for alleged sex with a 15-year old. He has denied all charges, according to Fox KDVR: "I have resigned all association to BreakEFX crew to ensure that the personal legal accusations by the Lamar Police Department do not represent, affect or harm the well being of BreakEFX."

Update from BreakEFX: Crew injury, upcoming plans and more

The manager of BreakEFX sent an update on their crew, including Cameron's injury and upcoming plans:
  •  Although it wasn't spoken of during the episode, one of our dancers, Cameron Hobbs, suffered a severe knee injury on the Sunday night prior to the Tuesday taping. This forced BreakEFX to abruptly alter our piece in less then 24 hours to taping. It was an extremely stressful situation and quit honestly scary for my dancers. Putting all ABDC glory aside, my dancers truly consider themselves family and it was incredibly difficult to watch one of the strongest siblings in the crew go through so much pain and agony less then 24 hours from taping. BreakEFX muscled through the situation in a way that none can compare - they continue to amaze me with their strength and courage. With the aid of Cameron's parents, we were able to provide Cam with acupuncture treatments & various fitted knee braces which allowed Cameron the option to temporarily dance through the injury for the Tuesday taping. Further, it's our understanding that the judges were not informed in anyway of the injury. Now that we are safely back home in Colorado, Cameron has seen a specialist and in fact has severely torn his ACL. He will undergo surgery in a week and be out of commission for up to 9 months.
  • Its true that neither JC nor Omarion attended the Denver auditions. Shane Sparks and Nichelle were the ABDC judges during the callbacks.
  • BreakEFX will be performing alongside We Are Hereos and Status Quo tomorrow evening in Ft.Collins, Colorado for a live dance show called "Cruz Controls". The show is being sponsored by Colorado State University and is already close to being sold out.

Lil Mama Apologizes for Remarks to Leiomy

Update on the story about Lil Mama's comments to Vogue Evolution's Leiomy. The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD), received the following apology this morning from Lil Mama:

"I would like to clarify anything that was misunderstood from Sunday's show. My remarks were never meant to be disrespectful regarding Leiomy's gender nor offensive to the LGBT community, which has been a community that has supported me in all my endeavors. However, in hindsight, I recognize that my words may have come across as hurtful. I spoke with her privately after the taping to express that it was not my intent to offend her or any member of the transgender community and that I still live for Vogue Evolution."

GLAAD's response, issued by Rashad Robinson, Senior Director of GLAAD's Media Programs: "While we thank Lil Mama for her apology, this incident demonstrates the need for more education around the lives and experiences of transgender people. Lil Mama’s comments during her critique attempted to impose standards of conformity for gender identity and expression -- a mistake that many people make. Transgender people, particularly transgender women of color, become targets of discrimination and violence when inaccuracies and acts of insult like this are advanced. Contrary to what was said on the program, as an openly transgender woman and dance contestant, Leiomy is living her truth... It was surprising that MTV, a network that has shown a strong commitment to fair and accurate inclusion of transgender and gay people, would choose to air a clip that includes such disrespectful comments.”

Mailbox: Lil Mama interview, great ratings, crew videos and your dose of Detox

  • Bossip interviews Lil Mama about her music, her life, and her role on America's Best Dance Crew. Here, she talks about her unique role on ABDC: "I bring swag and identity. I definitely inspire the show... As you can see a lot of the crews wear studs in their clothes. They wear bright colors. That’s all inspired by Lil’ Mama. Before that, that style wasn’t on our show or any show...It’s so many people that love my style and love what I bring"
  • If MTV cancels America's Best Dance Crew, it shouldn't be based on ratings alone. According to TV By the Numbers, last week's ABDC delivered its highest ratings since the Season 1 finale for people aged 12-24
  • Pacific Rim uploaded 11 new backstage videos of Quest, Beat Freaks, and Fly Khicks
  • LMFAO help Jim Cantiello figure out this week's ABDC

Season 3 Crew: Fly Khicks

The Fly Khicks are a 6-woman crew from Miami. They met when they were all selected to for the Miami Heat Dance Team, which has beenvoted the most popular NBA Dance team for the last several years. Members include: Wendy (Real), Tracy (Mama), Teena (Trendy), Karelix (Sassy), Gina (Mini) and Michelle (Cheena).

Contact them at myspace.com/flykhicks or on Facebook.

Okay, a word on the videos -- I don't know if Fly Khicks' choreography will look anything like the performances of the Miami Heat Dancers, but I wanted to show something of their skills. Obviously the Miami Heat Dance Team is not typical hiphop and the squad is working the sex angle. But try to look beyond the obvious and watch the athleticism of the dancers. I think they successfully get past the 'just a cheerleader' criticism leveled at SassX7 during Season 2. And, I'm curious to see what this group -- away from the Heat -- brings on their own.

From Miamiheatis, here's the full dance team in action last year:

And here's heatdiva's video of Fly Khick Traci dancing with the founder of Live in Color (ABDC Season 1).

  • Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen (and friends) donned JabbaWockeeZ masks to conceal their identies at a friend's wedding. Somehow I don't think they busted any major moves at the reception. Read the report here.
  • The Lantern (the student newspaper for Ohio State) covered Boogies Bots and Live In Color's performance at "Step it Up and Dance"

  • I know Halloween was last week, but we HAD to share this shot of Layla Kayleigh as the tooth fairy. We have no idea who Elvis is, but he looks happy.

Mario Lopez and Live In Color on Ellen Degeneres Show

Okay, today's Ellen Degeneres show was a repeat of the February 14 show, so I had to sit through Valentines Day jokes for 20 minutes. But it was worth it to see Mario Lopez acting cute and discussing America's Best Dance Crew Season 1. And it was DEFINITELY worth it to see Live In Color (the Miami crew from Season 1) perform again. Here's the Youtube video of the Mario and ABDC segment:
