HHI '14: Videos and Updates | Elektrolytes, Urban Moves Workshops, & HHI '15

To say that I'm experiencing 'HHI withdrawal' is a huge understatement.  Man, I wish I was there.  But luckily, Hip-Hop International on Facebook keeps everyone constantly updated.  According to them, some of the international crews are starting to pour in while Parris Goebel, Philip Pacman Chbeeb, & NappyTabs teach their Urban Moves Workshops.  In other news, it was announced several days ago that the Hip-Hop International event will be moving from the Red Rocks Resort, New Orleans Arena and Las Vegas altogether to their NEW home in Southern California in 2015.  That's major!

Video: SYTYCD Highlight #3: Emilio (IaMmE) and Bridget dance jazz

Emilio Dosal (member of ABDC's IaMmE) and Bridget Whitman danced a jazz routine choreographed by Ray Leeper. Emilio is certainly following the example of Phillip Chbeeb (fellow IaMmE member who made it to SYTYCD Top 10 several seasons ago) in picking up disparate dance styles and making them his own.

Video: SYTYCD Highlight #2 - Academy of Villains perform on Top 14 show

Academy of Villains was one of the 4 top vote getting crews during the So You Think You Can Dance auditions. They appeared on the August 30 show and easily matched the intensity and style of most of the top 14. It was choreographed by Chris Pharside Jennings and Krystal Meraz, who also did the choreography for a dance for Ricky Ubeda and Valerie Rockey

Chris Pharside Jennings (member of ABDC's Supreme Soul and founder of Academy of Villains) and fellow AOV founder Krystal Meraz choreographed an intense dance for Ricky Ubeda and Valerie Rockey. Hope the pair continue to choreograph for the show!

Video: Philip Chbeeb & Finger Circus - SHAPE ADDICTS

The first step in dealing with an addiction is to admit that you have an addiction.  I.aM.mE co-founder, Philip "Pacman" Chbeeb and his friends at Finger Circus took that first step when they agreed to go to Shape Addicts Anonymous.  But what happens when you put a bunch of Shape Addicts together in one room?... Videos: The Latest from Poreotics

Unfortunately, we won't be seeing the tic-tic-tic-ing robots on the SYTYCD stage, but they ain't going nowhere!  Check out the latest from the ABDC champs, Poreotics.  First is a piece from Charles to Warm Water's "Banks (Snakehip Remix)" - it's a feel-good, summertime piece.  We haven't been seeing too much of Dumbo lately, but that's because he's puttin' in hours in the sound studio.  Check out this track produced by Dumbo himself entitled "REACTIVATE".  *And as a bonus video, check out what the boys are up to right before they hit the stage.  Maybe they should go for the Sing-Off next... Today's must-watch video: Dtrix gets both the comedy & dancing right in "Now add a Dancer"

Dominic 'Dtrix' Sandoval (member of ABDC Season 3's Quest) is a Youtube megastar, usually with emphasis more on his personal style of humor. This time, Phillip 'Pacman' Chbeeb (ABDC Season 6's IaMmE) took the lead on the choreography (with help from many friends) and the results are wonderful, particularly IMO for the table setting, and pool party.

Video: SYTYCD Atlanta audition hiphop highlights - Dynamic and Mr. Strange

This season's So You Think You Can Dance Atlanta auditions yielded great dancers in ballet, contemporary, jazz, and hiphop. My two favorite hiphop auditioners from the episode were Christopher 'Mr. Strange' Griffin (the founder of Dragon House) and Taveous 'Dynamic' Woods. Both made it to the next round, though it's unclear whether each can meet the multi-style challenges of the competition.

Video: Vote for this week's favorite crew - Jungle Boogie vs. Control Freakz

SYTYCD hiphop video highlight: allstars Fik-shun, Cyrus & Legacy battle auditioner Kyle

Kyle Taylor auditioned on the June 4 So You Think You Can Dance. After his solo, Nigel Lithgoe suggested that he should be doing some hiphop battling. This set up a fun battle between SYTYCD all-stars Fik-shun , Cyrus, and Legacy. Unfortunately, Kyle will not be going through to the next round.

SYTYCD Hiphop highlight: Marie 'Poppins' audition with Fik-shun

In the So You Think You Can Dance auditions show on June 4, there were 2 instances of the hiphop auditioners working with SYTYCD Allstars. Marie 'Poppins' Bonnevay started out solo, but Fik-shun (winner in last season's SYTYCD) hopped onstage to dance with her. Mary won dance awards at Hiphop International, and was supposed to be a member of We Are Heroes (winner of ABDC Season 4) but had to drop out because of some logistical and timing issues. TV viewers will get to see more of Mary, as she easily made it to the next round on SYTYCD.

So You Think You Can Dance video highlight #2: Jaja Vankova

Will a third member of IaMmE (winners of ABDC Season 6) make it to the top 20 of So You Think You Can Dance? Phillip 'Pacman' Chbeeb made it before he was on ABDC, Emilio Dosal made it last season (but dropped out because of an injury). Is it Jaja Vankova's turn? Her audition in Los Angeles was so powerful that she scored an almost-unheard of standing ovation from the judges and made it directly to the next round.

Tomorrow, we'll post two more hiphop highlights from this week's SYTYCD so stay tuned!

So You Think You Can Dance hiphop video highlight #1: Academy of Villains v. Breaksk8

The two crews facing off against each other this week are Breaksk8 (ABDC Season 1) vs. Academy of Villains (founded by Chris 'Pharside' Jennings of ABDC Season 2' Supreme Soul). You can still vote for your favorite by tweeting #SYTYCDsk8 or #SYTYCDvillains until 8pm EDT on Tuesday June 10.

Watch the show, then vote for your favorite either on the SYTYCD website or by texting #sytycdsk8 or #sytycdvillains.

We'll have the video tomorrow when available (as well as a post and video of Jaja Vankova (member of ABDC's IaMmE) who had an amazing krump audition and got a standing ovation from the judges AND a video of a popping battle with SYTYCD allstars Fikshun, Legacy, Cyrus and an auditioner from Wichita.

Unfortunately, Poreotics did not win the popularity battle last week and will not be appearing on the show.

SYTYCD crew competition: help support hiphop by tweeting #sytycdPoreotics

So You Think You Can Dance has added some group dance to the audition shows, but America's Best Dance Crew fans may not be fully entertained. The two dance groups featured on the first show were Poreotics (winners of ABDC Season 5) vs. Syncopated Ladies (an East Coast tap dance group). The winners will be chosen by volume of twitter mentions with the hashtags #sytycdPoreotics vs #sytycdladies. Given the demographics for this show, it is not surprising that the tap dance women were way ahead in the voting by the end of the episode.

If you want to help out Poreotics (or Syncopated Ladies), get in there now and tweet or vote online here! Voting closes on Tuesday June 3 at 8pm ET. We'll post videos of the performances once they are available.

Poreotics will compete on So You Think You Can Dance on May 28!

Follow-up to our last story -- Poreotics Iwinners of America's Best Dance Crew Season 5) tweeted that they will be appearing on So You Think You Can Dance's first episode this season, on Fox TV May 28.

It'll be great to see them again and to see how their style has evolved. I'm curious how SYTYCD is choosing the crews -- will there be mostly tried-and-true dancers or add some crews new to TV, will they use crews that feature some of their dancers (e.g., Quest, IaMmE), what geographies will they draw from? This is not a criticism -- any wide exposure of dancers has the potential to help the dance community. More please! Thank for the update Ninjaboi!

TV Dance Crew news: So You Think You Can Dance auditions will feature a dance crew competition!

Shades of America's Best Dance Crew redux.  In a brand new element on So You Think You Can Dance, Justin Bieber and his choreographer Nick DeMoura will introduce top dance crews from across the country that will vie for a spot on the season finale.

Beginning next week on the two-hour season premiere, airing Wednesday, May 28 (8:00-10:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX, Bieber and DeMoura will showcase two dance crews on each of the four audition episodes. After the crews are showcased, hash tags will be revealed that viewers can use to tweet their favorite of the two crews. The tweets will be tallied and the most popular crew overall will be invited to perform on the finale
.

We don't know yet who will compete. But stay tuned -- maybe this will bode well for dance crews. Thanks for the tip Ninjaboi!
